As we all know Agatha Christie is still hugely popular and the most translated novelist in the world, with numerous stage, tv and film adaptations also made of her works, and if you read this collection you will soon discover why. Whilst many of her contemporaries were writing slightly longer novels, Christie condensed hers somewhat by leaving out information that was not pertinent to creating the scenes and characters, thus knocking off about a hundred pages or so in her books, plus on top of that, which is the most important, is her style. No one knows whether her writing style was conscious or not, but by the careful usage of certain wording, and the subtle changes she made in the narrative pacing of her works so she was to a certain degree able to give you information in plain sight that can go missed. The first tale here then is her debut novel, and in The Mysterious Affair at Styles so we meet Captain Hastings and the great Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. The second novel here gives us the first introduction to Tommy and Tuppence, and also amongst these pages we meet Inspector Japp, Superintendent Battle and Colonel Race. Poirot Investigates and Poirot’s Early Cases are both short story collections and they have been listed under the individual titles of the stories in the product description. Of course, we all know that The Murder of Roger Ackroyd was deemed to be the best crime novel ever, and she had in her lifetime received many awards, and honours, and even now posthumously still does.
At times it is often overlooked that Christie was not just a great crime writer, but also could hold her own with thrillers, as is shown with a couple of books here. Although the vast majority of stories herein are based in this country, so also at times we find ourselves transported elsewhere, such as Southern Africa, the High Seas, Egypt and France. From murder to abduction, robbery to espionage, so this is a collection that will certainly give you some variety and that is a joy to read, and although many like me have read all of these before there will also be newer readers, and this makes a great introduction for them to Agatha Christie, in both her range and quality.
