Great game let down by launch bugs and silly features
As a massive assassin's creed fan, I of course pre ordered Odyssey as soon as it was available, which may have been a bit silly in retrospect.
The game itself is a tour de force, with a fantastic original storyline, vast game scape, elegant and intuitive mechanics and even things like the skills building and weapon menus are brilliantly planned and executed.
The major theme sets Odyssey in ancient Greece, where you choose to play the role of either a brother or sister budding assassin, ex-Spartan mercenary bent on avenging your childhood betrayal while finding out "who you are", by way of taking down a dodgy cult and romping around the utterly stunning landscape.
The game balances stealth well with combat, where you can craft your protagonist to operate to your preferred play style: if you like to tank with open combat, you can focus on a "warrior" or "hunter" profile, as well as determining if your character is an up-close or comfortable-distance combatist - or concentrate on stealth with an assassin profile - or mix up the two. When caught in combat in any scenario though, this is challenging and rewarding rather than hack-&-slash monotony.
Layering the gameplay, there are literally hundreds of varied side quests to keep things interesting, and plenty of naval action which combines the seven seas fun of black flag with the more simple style from origins, so if you're not a massive fan of it it doesnt have to be a major component of your game.
Characters, dialogue and AI are all as good again as Origins, using much the same bones as the Egyptian shenanigans but with a beautiful new skin and enough new details that it feels like an original game rather than just a re-skin like the older AC games were starting to be.
Which sounds like an oddly glowing description for a 3 star rating: but this is where it gets disappointing.
The game is riddled with bugs; from minor graphic ticks (couple of flickering people, floating animals, that sort of thing) to major annoyances - in every play session since buying it, the game has locked or crashed at least once. My Xbox is less than 6 months old and plays other games fine - so it's not an issue with the machine. It also hangs repeatedly, which is particularly frustrating when it hangs and releases during critical moments in combat. I've even had a couple of instances where my character just locks in one spot but all other controls like menu access and camera move fine (the most "fun" one being after boarding a ship Id just assaulted, which I had to wait in until it sank before I could swim off!) - but the crashing is ridiculous, and of course usually happens at transition points, meaning repeatedly skipping through long dialogue scenes, and even having to redo punishing boss fights, after reloading.
Why its felt to be consistently acceptable to release AAA games that are fundamentally flawed, requiring patch after patch is beyond me. You're buying a disk- everything you need should be on it from day 1!
As well as the technical issue, there is again a micro transaction system lurking behind the £50 price tag, which while not essential for progression is made alluring by the need to farm and grind for huge amounts of drachmae and resources to upgrade your kit and ship - which takes tons of material to achieve even one or two levels of build. You've already taken my fifty quid, don't try and fleece me for in-game resources too!
Also there's a weird system with the legendary items that means you can neither sell them nor dismantle them for resources - so you're basically stuck with a pile of useless stuff for your entire game. Apparently the idea here is you don't accidentally lose items for a set, but if you don't want them why would you care??
So for me, the game itself is a 5 star beauty, but loses a star for the technical issues, and another for the crappy low resource/ locked gear/ sleazy in-game purchase system.
And the reason I think it might have been silly to pre order it, those bugs - SO irritating - will I'm sure over time be fixed by more patches, so I think I'd have been better off waiting a month, let the price drop a little and get one big update that fixes the issues.
At least however there's no forced multiplayer!

Still going strong!

Contains Spoilers. Initially I was very sceptical about buying Assassins Creed Odyssey as it looked a little too similar to Origins in regards to mechanics, visuals and game play but after playing for around 15 hours I can safely say that this is a must buy in the series! If you liked Origins then there is no way that this will be a disappointment. In fact I believe it is far superior to Origins. I was worried at first that Odyssey would pretty much be a copy and paste of Origins. For the most part it is, but it still feels very much like a game of its own and stands out distinctly in the series. In fact one of the best! I have always considered Black Flag and Brotherhood to be my favourites in the series and this would easily come in as my third favourite. In fact if the game keeps going as strongly as this throughout then I would even consider putting this as my second favourite or even my all time favourite, its that good.
Where this game shines is its combat mechanics and story. The mechanics feel the same but more has been added to give it a whole other layer. You can now assign special abilities that are unlocked the more you level up and can be used to great effect in combat. They are divided in two areas (melee and long range) and can be used once you have dealt enough damage or have performed successful dodges and parry's etc. They are assigned to hot keys, so by pressing LB/LT and then A B X or Y this performs a special ability. An example of one is you are able to perform the "Spartan Kick" that knocks enemy backwards and is just insanely fun. Another example is that your able to fire arrows at 3 separate enemies at once whilst in combat which is extremely effective when your up against multiple enemies. There are many of these types of abilities in the game and you can assign 8 altogether that can be used in real time in combat. This new system really adds more depth, diversity and fun.
I immediately fell in love with the characters and the greek setting. Its without doubt the most beautiful looking AC to date and its no wonder as Greece itself is one the most breathtaking places there is. Out of all the AC games I believe this is the best as far as storytelling. I have never been this gripped in an AC storyline before and it holds one of the most compelling stories in any game I have ever played period. Already there are twists and turns and all the while it is being carried along by interesting and charismatic characters. Alexio is now my favourite AC character since EZIO.
A big surprise for me was the fact that you can also take command of your own ship which I wasn't aware was a part of the game! Not only that, there are many upgrades and cosmetics you can apply to it aswel. You can even hire lieutenants that can be recruited in the world and will aid you in combat when you board other ships and they can be used in the world to distract your enemies. Other game play options include hunting down mercenaries, cultists, and acquiring miscellaneous missions from jobs boards (land and sea) I also find that side missions are far more enjoyable than they were in Odyssey. One of the main goals is to reduce the amount of power that the Athaneans hold in Greece, district by district. Once this is done in a certain area, you can then take part in a big scale battle, which if you emerge victorious, it will be handed over to Spartan control. Additionally you have the option to take the Athenian's side or just put yourself as the neutral party and set both factions against each other.
My only negatives are that I wish they would bring back more stealth mechanics such as blending and distractions. I also wish there was more counter attacking abilities in the combat like there were in the older games where if you timed it right your character would automatically perform some bad ass finishing move and you could streak your strikes onto other nearby enemies. I still prefer the older mechanics as is was more about how you defend yourself rather than hacking and slashing. Having said that, the combat is still immensely fun, I just find that the way combat was handled in the older games, felt more in line how an actual Assassin would have performed.
So just when we thought that the AC series has lost all steam, it comes back swinging with this release and it does not disappoint.

Odyssey An Upgrade On Origins
I purchased this game just after christmas.
Origins had really burnt me out. In November I went back to Origins to just grab a couple of trophies and I'd spent ages reading reviews and watching a few videos on Odyssey and finally decided to plunge back in.
I've played around 35 hours so far and I'm only about 35% through the main story. They brought the ships back which I personally hated in Black Flag mainly because it seemed that was a core part of that game. So far in Odyssey it's a portion of it but it's not the core part so I can get used to it.
New abilities in Odyssey and many more things to do. There are tiers of mercenaries that will hunt you if you get a bounty level, though you can pay this off in your map screen.
They have a whole section of Cultists too which you need to hunt down and assassinate as well as each regions has leaders that you can kill to de-stabliise/weaken the region and this then opens up Conquest battles.
I really enjoy the Assassins Creed games and they always offer many many hours of entertainment and enjoyment.
Would I recommend Odyssey? Hell yeah, Would I expect an improvement in graphics compared to Origins? Not really.
Ubisoft have become great at really churning out a new AC game every 1-2 years and while the environments do change graphically the textures do not.
The combat though, for me, really allows me to bypass expecting any great miracles. I'll definitely be completing this game and for £30 anyone that is undecided it will be money well spent.

Good edition to the series
I have always been a fan of the assassins creed games although there have been some misteps over the years.
And there may be a case that it is losing the assassins creed original feel but as a game in its own right it is great.
Origins was in my opinon excellent, and i liked the update to the fight mechanics. Odyssey feels familiar to this, plays fantastically and looks awesome.
Despite the short time between Odyssey and Origins i feel Ubisoft have still managed to produce and excellent game in a new environment, also, side missions are no longer monotonous rinse and repeat missons but worth exploring as much as the main story line

Great RPG
I like RPG`s and playing as the female warrior. The graphics and music are great.
The gameplay at Level 1 is a bit frustrating as the enemies go up to Level 5 on the starting Island. Prepare to die often.
Explore the whole Island. Collect money, resources, weapons & amour. Go to the Blacksmith to improve your gear and
the game gets more fun and interesting to play.
Photo mode is great. It`s already switched on. To activate it, press down on both sticks, adjust the image to look just right, press Y then A. Your photo will appear on the world map at the location you took the photo for everyone to see.
