Bellissimo film, consigliato a tutti.
Blu ray dal video eccellente (4K) e un audio ottimo (in particolare pensando ai rumori: della nave, dei motori, delle armi, dell'acqua degli idranti, gli sgocciolii, i sussurri, ecc) nel quale anche gli extra sono buoni.
A questo prezzo bassissimo vale assolutamente la pena!
Tutti i Blu-ray dovrebbero mantenere questa qualità ad un prezzo simile.

Molto particolare la scelta dell'attacco da parte di pirati somali ad una nave cargo di container.
Molto interessanti i dettagli del sistema di sicurezza sulle navi da trasporto, come pure del vero e proprio 'arrembaggio' da una barchetta traballante al 'mostruoso natante americano'.
Ottime interpretazioni da parte del Capitano (Tom Hanks) come pure dell'equipaggio, e dei magri e ossuti pirati somali: eccellenti davvero!

Interessantissima la vicenda: adattamento cinematografico del libro 'Il dovere di un capitano' (A Captain's Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea), autobiografia di Richard Phillips, sul dirottamento della Maersk Alabama - un fatto avvenuto tra l'8 e il 12 aprile 2009 che comportò il sequestro della nave mercantile omonima da parte di un gruppo di 4 pirati somali, divenendo infine un braccio di ferro con le forze della Marina americana, in particolare portando all'intervento di una squadra del DEVGRU appartenente ai Navy SEALs.

Ottima anche la regia, le ambientazioni (dai bui interni della nave cargo, alla "gabbia" infocata della scialuppa con la quale i pirati rapiscono il capitano Phillips, dirigendosi verso la costa africana), nessun colpo di scena eclatante, ma un bel susseguirsi di fatti (come la ferita al piede causata dallo spargimento di cocci di vetro all'ingresso della sala macchine) tutti ben studiati nel costruire l'azione e mantenere vivo l'interesse dello spettatore.

Naturalmente avvincente l'intervento della Marina americana e dei Seals: colpisce, come sempre, l'enorme mobilitazione di forze militari statunitensi (addirittura una portaerei!) per salvare una sola persona (il capitano Phillips) in fin dei conti da quattro pirati scheletrici e morti di fame... comunque un intervento dovuto, per la salvaguardia dell'ostaggio (sebbene anche il classico "preservare l'immagine di strapotenza militare americana" abbia giocato certamente un ruolo chiave in tutta la vicenda...).
Come attestano gli stessi dialoghi finali tra i militari americani e i pirati: "Non vi permetteremo di andare oltre".

Film di tensione che apporta comunque spunti riflessivi

Il film si fa apprezzare principalmente perché, pur essendo di un finale scontato, apporta nello spettattore un notevole stato di tensione la quale ne permea tutto l'andamento. Fa riflettere perché, da un lato, c'è il gigante americano, con il suo marketing, le sue enormi navi militari, il suo eccezionale apparato di intelligence, dall'altro c'è una banda di pescatori/pirati i quali - ricattati a loro volta dai signori della guerra locali -, sbarcano in tal modo il lunario. Questo è il mondo moderno ahimè, ed anche se il regista si affanna nello strombazzare e tutelare vari valori cari agli stessi governanti statunitensi (uno per tutti, rassicurare l'americano medio che si affida alle risorse del suo paese e al patriottismo che tutto pervade e avviluppa), tale stridente realtà fuoriesce inesorabile colpendo nel profondo l'utente più avveduto. Film comunque girato in modo impeccabile e veramente ben recitato, non solo da Hanks, ma anche dagli stessi somali che ne bilanciano la sua invadente presenza scenica.
L''audio - in linea coi film Sony - è ottimo. Il video è parimenti eccellente anche se forse ha ragione quel cliente che si duole del fatto che le scene in notturna evidenziano una certa granulosità. Credo dipenda dalle telecamere usate nel film. In sostanza comunque un buonfilm (anche se non un capolavoro) ed un più che buono bluray.

Dall'inizio dalla fine questo film è puro intrattenimento, a volte le storie vere sono raccontate davvero male, ma qui il regista ha saputo fare davvero un gran lavoro.
Che dire dell'interpretazione di Tom Hanks, è in film come questi che si può solo confermare quanto sia un pilastro del cinema

Blu-Ray. Gran bel film, ben girato e recitato. Grandissimo Tom Hanks ma altrettanto gli attori somali. Eccellente il comparto A/V. Immagini compatte e molto naturali. L'audio è in DTS HD Master Audio lossless (è un tipo di compressione che a differenza di quella Lossy non ha perdita di dati, una specie di Zip e Rar in sostanza che una volta decompresso, in riproduzione torna al formato originale perfettamente integro), non è particolarmente dirompente visto anche la natura del film, ma è ricchissimo di effetti ambientali davvero molto belli. Voci sempre molto intelleggibili. Peccato solo per i pochi contenuti speciali (commenti + documentario sulla lavorazione del film). Considerando l'argomento sarebbe stato bello che fosse presente anche un documentario sulla reale questione del fenomeno della pirateria in quei mari. In ogni caso più che consigliato.

This film takes tension to a whole new place. It tells the true story of a ship hijacked by Somalis as it is en route to Mombassa. I researched the story afterwards, and pretty much what happened for real is what happened in the film. I'd read about differences in what the individual characters really did, but you know what, it's a great film, and if it's been modified a bit by Hollywood, then that's another discussion. This is tense, gripping stuff all the way, and so realistic it's like you're actually there. Totally well acted, compulsive viewing.

'Tom Hanks' remains among todays finest actors with many notable film role's to
his credit down the years including 'Forrest Gump' 'Cast-a-way' 'The Terminal'
and 'Saving Private Ryan' among them.
'Captain Richard Phillips' is in charge of cargo-ship 'The Alabama'
The route they have to travel takes them into the 'Somalia Basin' ships travelling
in those waters are well aware of the threat posed by 'Somalia Pirates'
The 'Alabama' travels alone through the notorious waters soon drawing the attention
of the 'Pirates'
The ship initially out-runs the pursuing hijackers, however they come again...........
this time they board.
The Captain has ordered lock-down, however the Pirates insist on searching the
vessel to locate the crew who have attempted to hide from the intruders.
The Captain does all he can to protect them
The film shifts up a gear when events take a turn when a trade-off leaves the Captain
in a hostage situation.
Things are going to become desperate for the hostage and hijackers alike.
Based on real events--the film is a tense affair, edge of your seat stuff indeed.
An outstanding performance from 'Tom Hanks'
Superb picture and sound quality throughout.

Bare Bones Operation

First off it's a great film and a really good story.

I liked how it addresses certain issues about the pressures of the modern world and the basic instinct of survival, and young people finding their barefeet in this world. (checking for glass).

The intensity is good, The Bourne Ultimatum's director is on board, but he doesn't beat about the bush. The things I like in a film are locations, I want to be able to take in the views, landscape and scenery. I felt there was not enough of this, and the camera is hooked on the action - This also hinders the project when you consider how long the middle scene of the film is. Of course the intensity is rightly there, this is a true story afterall, but there was just no background action in play, it was full steam ahead and you do start wishing they'd... (won't spoil it).

So, this film is good and it gets the awards - true stories are enough for most, seeing them adorn the silver screen - ooh, look! That happened in reality. But I just wonder if it could've possibly yanked it's head out of 'Bourne' mode once in a while, a little something on mainland. It ends abruptly too - it's a good ending, but abrupt. Would have liked to have seen a bit more relationship between Philips and Muse, cos I really feel like there was something to follow up there, I mean it's been a few years now. When you think of Castaway and how it gently lands and gives you something to think about, I was expecting more of that - 'Scenery for thought' would be good.

But at least this film does give you something to think about, the pressures of life etc. Just wish it didn't push us off a cliff and leave us dangling! That Somalian character calling him 'Irish', you want to know more about him...

Another of those films that I saw at the cinema and then immediately went on to Amazon pre-order for the DVD.

We closed the blinds and turned off all lights, one cold dark early evening, to try and create a cinema-like experience and make our 46" television look larger (!) and settled down to watch this fabulous film.

Even though we had already seen it, the tension was still palpable.

Tom Hanks is an actor who can do no wrong; always makes good choices; always puts in an amazing performance beit serious or comedy; and you know that you are in for a treat when you see his films. Probably only a few others who are in this league - Clint Eastwood, Meryl Streep, Matthew McConaughey.

Highly recommended.

Don't miss this - amazing film and performance by Tom Hanks

This is compelling viewing in part because of the superb perfomance given by Tom Hanks as the Captain of a container ship attacked by Somali pirates. The tension builds and builds troughout the film, before reaching a startling climax. The relative powerlessnes of modern technology in the face of a determined and resourceful challenge comes across througout from the ease with which the attackers could attack a massive modern ship to the constraints on the military on addressing the challenge when human lives are at stake.

This is remarkable human drama - the stresses on the Somalis are made clear too - and Tom Hank's performance is powerful, engaging, and entrirly believable.

This is a must watch film
