I've had a similar pair of leather low-cut Merrell hiking boots that have lasted 10 years (hiking and bird watching) and are still really comfortable and in good shape-except for looking scruffy, so I decided to buy a new pair. I wore them out for a 2 mile walk this morning and am very pleased. That being said, I've replaced the shoe laces as they are short and so slippery they came undone twice. I also cut down the height of the arch on the removable shoe insert to make them feel more comfortable and to prevent arch pain developing. I hope to buy another pair in ten years (ha ha).
I am measured at 81/2 EEE. I have high arches and developing bunions. Most 8 1/2 EEE are problematic so for most shoe makes I need to go with 9M. I usually like Merrell 9M and have several pairs in other styles. I only buy when on sale because Merrell and the shoes other brands (higher end Clarks and Rockport styles and sometimes higher end Sketchers) that are good for my feet are expensive. I have been a little suspicious that as they ahve become more popular, Merrell quality had deteriorated slightly. That did not appear to be the case on first appearance with these shoes. They looked great and I wanted to keep them. But after only a few minutes of test ware inside the house on rug, it wa clear that this version of the 9M was too narrow in the toe box. The 9W was far more expensive and not on sale, so I had to return these rather than exchange. Plus, not ever having worn a Merrell 9W I was concerned it would be a bad fit for other portions of my fee, especially in the heel where I have some other issues. (Sigh.)
These are well-constructed shoes with a great sole and nice looks. The fit is snug, somewhat like a training shoe, but with a rigid toe box. Good support in the arch. The page suggested the size based on another shoe that I had, and the fit was correct.
These claim to be waterproof. I have not yet tested them in the field, but I am a bit skeptical. The fabric of the shoe may be waterproof, but the tongue is padded, not gusseted, so water will come in there if the shoe wearer steps in a deep enough puddle. They are somewhat warm relative to other shoes, so it would seem that the fabric indeed might be waterproof, and that would help if all that was involved was walking through wet grass.
Overall, I am pleased with the purchase. But the description should mention the tongue construction.
I love Merrells and bought this one to use for the occasional casual dress situations. I am not pleased with the fit. I received the correct size (as labeled) and visually they appear the same size as a pair of Moabs I wear for every day. These have a smaller fit and the insole doesn’t offer much support. I put elastic laces to improve comfort. I’d return them if I hadn’t kept them past the return date.
