Laced shoes are fine for cavemen and 17th century gentlemen alike

5000 years ago, the Ice Man of Austria went out on a walk up in the mountains above his village. He never came home. Flash forward to the modern day, and his mummified remains are discovered in the ice by hikers. His body and all his personal effects were perfectly preserved. On his feet scientists found shoes that were likely made by someone in his village who specialized in making shoes. How were they tied? With laces of course.

Laced shoes are fine for cavemen and 17th century gentlemen alike. But now it's the 21st century, we've been to the moon, we have robotic explorers arriving at Pluto, and it's time for us to use space age closures for our footwear. We've evolved from the days of the neolithic hunter gatherers. Velcro footwear is the future. Now if they could just invent flying cars...

A good walking shoe for the flat-footed.

Bought this shoe because I am about as flat-footed as one can be. Walking for more than a few minutes can become a painful chore for me. The 'roll bar" feature of the shoe, along with unusually good construction, have made thing somewhat more comfortable. New Balance shoes come in a good selection of widths. Something difficult to find in a mid-priced shoe these days. I was pleasantly surprised.

However, I wish that I had ordered a pair one half size longer because the inside padding tends to push the foot forward into the toe box more than most shoes. The toes begin to feel a bit cramped after wearing the shoes for awhile.

Overall, I will say that New Balance appears to understand feet better than most shoe makers. Well worth the price.

Good shoe

My husband has been having me order the 10-1/2 shoes. However, this time he had me order the 11s. He says there is more room in the toe box and he still has the length necessary not to crowd his toes on the end. He's very pleased with them.

The only thing he commented on was that the top velcro strap wasn't quite long enough to cover the whole bottom piece of the velcro closer. The manufacturer needs to take a look at this and reassess their measurements for the top strap. It doesn't really interfer with his getting the shoe to close but it would be nice to have that extra half inch of velcro for added holding power.

I bought these shoes because New Balance has narrow width shoes (I wear a 14 narrow in Men's) in somewhat of a variety. I have been buying this brand for years and have not been disappointed with their shoes. But, you do have to make sure what your buying as some NB shoes do not fit the same as others, even though the size is correct and that's a good thing because some folks need some variance in their fit as feet are as different as finger prints sometimes. You have to know your fit to get a good pair. I will keep buying this brand and recommend them to others.

The Only Shoe that I Wear

For years I have worn only New Balance shoes. I select the specific last that fits my feet, and I have stuck with that shoe (once the MW811). That shoe was discontinued, and this is my first try at the replacement/successor shoe, the MW812. It is a worthy successor to the MW811. New Balance shoes tend to run narrower than other brands, so I purchase the 4E width in New Balance and it fits my foot while other brands would be too wide in this width. I keep track of how many hours I wear a shoe. New Balance wears as long as any shoe will, and I purchase replacements online at regular intervals. Saves a lot of fuss and worry.

Synthetic material seems cheaply made for the price

We bought these for my father who needed a sturdy walking shoe after an accident. They seemed okay but compared to the Propet Men's Life Walker for half the price, the New Balance shoes seemed way overpriced. The size seemed small overall and the velcro straps were much thinner and shorter than the Propets. The Propets were genuine leather too. We ordered both the Propets and New Balance shoes hoping to find one pair that worked. We sent these back and ordered the Propet's in the next larger size. I've always worn New Balance shoes and always am happy with them. This time they just didn't quite make the grade.

New Balance Shoes Superb but need longer straps

I had some foot problems and the Podiatrist recommended I invest in New Balance shoes - that they were the best walking shoes on the market in his opinion. I have had New Balance in the past and agree but they do have one minor problem that I wish they would fix - they do not have long enough Velcro straps. The straps do not reach fully across the other part of the hook and eye arrangement on the shoe, leaving the rough under surface exposed, which tends to fray the cuffs of long pants if you are not wearing shorts. Come on New Balance, can't you spring for an extra inch or so of straps on your shoes - is it really that expensive to have the strap reach all the way across the shoe?? It affects not just this model, but many of the Velcro-style New Balance shoes. I have read similar comments on these pages with other styles of New Balance running and walking shoes. Other than that, they are superb shoes, especially if you have discomfort problems with your feet when walking long distances, like I do.

This shoe supposedly replaced the 927. The sole is more plastic than rubber which to me is a big minus. Also the tongue slips to the outside of my feet and doesn't stay centered. I'm living with it because I don't have the time to spend right now on looking for a correct shoe to replace the 927.

New Balance, if you are listening, removing the 927 was a big mistake. i was very satisfied with them and wore them for years. This seems to be another example of marketings decisions to replace the product line with something new and better. Well sometimes you cant. Just sayin.

I just got these because I needed a good pair of walkers to help with plantar fasciitis, and I've always liked New Balance. They don't have that exaggerated arch support that most generic shoes have that those of use with low arches kind of despise. Also, they're comfortable and reasonable stylish, and they have removable insoles if you have some of your own that you want to use instead. New Balance also has a set of brands that are (mostly) made in the USA if that sort of thing is important, and this was one of them.

Good shoes -- straps too short

These shoes feel very good on sore feet. I put them on after I get back from long hikes to give my feet a rest. I usually wear lace-up shoes, but the velcro strap shoes are easier to get on and off sore feet. As many other reviewers have mentioned, the velcro straps really are too short -- I have to pull them too tight to get them to "grab." I am also familiar with the old New Balance 811, the model that preceded the 812. The 811 was better, but the 812 is very good -- after all, I just bought another pair.
