One day a man arrives in town. Unassuming. Quiet.
The assassin known as Victor is hiding out in a small motel in Canada after a job across the border. A few days laying low and he'll be gone and leave no trace behind.
He doesn't count on getting to know a mother and her boy who reminds him of his own troubled childhood. When both vanish, only Victor seems to notice.
Once he starts looking for them, he finds himself at odds with the criminals who own the town. They want him gone. Only Victor's going nowhere until he discovers the truth and to them he's just a quiet man asking the wrong questions.
But that quiet man is a dangerous man.

The action-packed, gripping, twisty new Victor thriller from bestseller Tom Wood is his best yet ― Mystery Sequels (blog)
Descrizione del libro
L'autore
Tom Wood is a full-time writer born in Burton-on-Trent who now lives in London. After a stint as freelance editor and film-maker, he completed his first novel, The Hunter, which was an instant bestseller and introduced readers to a genuine antihero, Victor, an assassin with a purely logical view on life and whose morals are deeply questionable. Like Victor, Tom is passionate about physical sport, being both a huge boxing fan and practising Krav Maga martial arts, which has seen him sustain a number of injuries. He has not, however, ever killed anyone.
Tom also publishes standalone psychological thrillers, including A Knock at the Door.

Victor kind of redeems himself i(n the sense that he reverts to type) towards the end in an extended, ultraviolent set piece., but up to that point the Victor we know is basically absent. The ruthless, efficient, focused, killer of the first books is barely there. I hope that he will come to his senses and just stick to his job, with all that wonderful trade craft next time out. He's a far more compelling character that way. In this book, his suffering almost makes him saintly, and for a character like Victor, in a literary sense, that's fatal. Let Victor be Victor, and leave Reacher to Reacher.

Fresh from a job, Victor knows that he should walk away. He should be in another country; preferably another continent. Having promised to show a young boy how to fish though, Victor will see that promise through. When the boy and his mother go missing; Victor starts asking questions. Answers are not immediately forthcoming. That’s regrettable. For some.
This is a caffeine fuelled read. Victor’s usual bone dry drollery is in place and there is no step he will not take. At the very top of his game, Wood has outdone himself.

But if the author is going to insult his readers' intelligence, as he has done with this one, then I'll have to seriously think about engaging with the next.
C'mon Mr Wood: a severed femoral artery (and not even a clean laceration, but a gunshot wound), treated with a tourniquet and a blob of clot-all superglue - and our man then proceeding to wipe out a team of highly-trained bounty hunters - and even surviving having the wound re-opened in the final (let down) confrontation - all without any proper medical treatment ..... I think not.
In this latest Victor novel, we're taken beyond any sort of reasonable suspension of disbelief, and into the area of the super-hero. That's not what I signed up for.
Looking for better from you next time Mr Wood, or Victor's fan base will have shrunken by at least this reader.

Victor is completing his latest assignment when a chance encounter with a young boy and a promise given starts a chain of increasingly bloody events that leads Victor on another unstoppable spree of violence and death.
He faces off against the local town bully, a biker meth gang, Chicago enforcers, even a posse of bounty hunters. But hey...this is Victor the Assassin we are talking about here. Nondescript, always alert, relentlessly lethal. Suffice to say everyone gets what they are owed.
A good quick action thriller. If you like the Jack Reacher or Orphan X books then you will not be disappointed with this series.
