I have very mixed thoughts about The Rose Code. On the one hand it’s just the sort of book I love – historical fiction with a thrilling story and interesting characters that kept me wanting to read on and yet also made me want it to last as long as possible. On the other hand, it’s unevenly paced, with a slow start and a rushed ending that was somewhat of an anti-climax. My favourite character was Beth and I enjoyed reading how her character developed from a shy down trodden young woman into a brilliant cryptanalyst.

But when I first began reading it earlier this year I stopped after the opening pages and only picked it up again a couple of weeks or so ago. I initially stopped as the storyline involving Prince Philip made me very uncomfortable – Prince Philip was still alive when this book was written and when I first started to read it. He died in April this year.

The book begins in 1947 as Osla Kendall, a journalist working for the Tatler, is wondering what to wear for the Royal Wedding. She is in a ‘foul mood‘ as she wonders what to wear to the wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten.

Historical fiction mixes fact and fiction with both real and imaginary characters and I don’t have a problem with that. The character of Osla Kendall is based on a real person – in her Author’s Note Kate Quinn writes that she is ‘lightly fictionalized from the real-life Osla Benning, a beautiful, effervescent, Canadian-born heiress and Hut 4 translator who was Prince Philip’s long-term wartime girlfriend.‘ But by the time of the Royal Wedding Osla Benning was already married, not pining after Prince Philip. In writing their story Kate Quinn was not writing from facts but from her imagination as she put words in her characters’ mouths and described their emotions thoughts and feelings, which, of course, she could not have known.

However, I got over my dislike and read on – after all, this is fiction, not an accurate historical account. I like to know which is fact and which is fiction when I read historical fiction. So, after reading the review copy I received via NetGalley, I decided I needed to buy the published book and read the Author’s Note. And I’m glad did because I was relieved to find that Kate Quinn goes into a lot of detail to identify which characters are real and which fictional and how she has fictionalised them. She also reveals that she has also deviated from the historical records ‘to serve the story.’ I think this explains why I was uncomfortable with the book and why I don’t often read historical romances.

Superbly researched (even though the technical details of the code-breaking equipment were beyond me!), this story of the characters who were thrown together at Bletchley Park during World War II is absorbing and compelling. The author's notes at the end show how many of these were partly based on the real people who worked there. Narratives which jump from one time frame to another often irritate me, but in this case the jumps from the war years to 1947 and back added to the intrigue and tension, so that I had to keep reading to find out what happened next and how the 'traitor' would eventually be uncovered.

5,0 su 5 stelle establishes the importance of the women in code breaking, with technical detail and emotional depth

I love the description of the entirely believable intuitive leaps made to find cribs to break the codes, but more than that I love the way the real, every day (and not so every day) lives of the women are related to the war and secrets. More than that still, the plot is a page turner, and when you get to the end, you discover how much this is an accurate portrayal (with a few artistic variations) of the real people that actually carried out these amazing deeds. A beautiful counterpoint to the now fairly well documented work of Tommy Flowers and Alan Turing, which really gives a sense of the time (that my parents would have lived through).

I know the story of Bletchley Park quite well having read many books on the subject & visited a number of times to the park. I knew a number of people who worked there and whilst some of the story is fairly accurate there are better novels on the subject but the one element to the story is the link to Prince Philip, who met his future bride in 1934 and I cannot imagine this part of the story to be anywhere near truthful; it put me off finishing the book, and I was halfway through it. Too many errors about life in the UK, during this time period, to make it true to life it is more of a Fantasy

4,0 su 5 stelle Great story.

A great and interesting book, very well researched and brought to life with the three friends Osla, Mab and Beth. I enjoyed all of their stories, all with different war experiences and backgrounds. It is a long book, 85 chapters, probably it could be a lot shortest, and there are a lot of typos, my favourite refers to Shakespeare's Henry TV's ! There is a lot of actual fact among the fiction, I liked the inclusion of Prince Philip but not so much that Osla was based on a real person called Osla who went out with Philip. I loved Osla who in my head was Trixie from Call the Midwife! There are difficult parts of the book but it was wartime, life was not fun, however ultimately the couple of twists in the end are welcome, maybe all a bit far fetched but clever all the same. Having finished the book I miss it.

I wasn’t sure whether another story set in Bletchley Park would warrant the telling, having just seen some televised, but this was an excellent read and kept me up late several nights! It wasn’t just about code breaking but the problems of signing the official secrets act, and the treatment of women, at this time, and the heartbreak of losing men killed in WW2.

I don't write many reviews, I think in part because I read quite a lot of books and would rather be reading my next book than writing about them. Once in a while I come across one that I think is worth pausing over and reflecting upon. The Rose Code is one of those. As someone who played with ciphers when in my early teens, Bletchley Park, the Enigma machines, Turing, et al have always fascinated me. This book is clearly beautifully researched and set in the height of Bletchley's power and intrigue. I recommend it unreservedly to anyone with an interest in Bletchley Park and its history. (Oh, and if you choose to visit Bletchley Park, please also visit and support the National Museum of Computing, which has as a working replica of the Colossus, used to break the Lorenz cipher that the German High Command used, among other computing gems)

I really enjoyed this book as different to what I usually go for.
It was slightly long winded at times and I also thought the train journeys were a bit too easy in those dark times. Surely there was major explosions along the lines and it would have taken a long time to travel from Bletchley to London and to Cambridge by rail as well? All a bit too smooth.
From family war time stories Bletchley was the stamping ground of debs and wrens plus the language used by Os sounds exhausting!
I also read the book after Prince Philip died and cannot possibly image him as portrayed in the book.
It needs editing for the English reader which is annoying but a good story overall.

Good story based on the work at Bletchley Park, the secret code breaking establishment in WWII. A well written story, and the romance with Prince Philip was sensitively handled and poignant in view of his recent death.

There were some mistakes- a telephone in Shoreditch home, those long boots would have been bespoke and some of the expressions were American but these are slight niggles.

The toast incident at Bletchley had a mention. I visited Bletchley Park in 2019, well worth a visit. The cover story for locals was that it was a hospital for damaged soldiers which explained the bus loads of young women arriving for shifts around the clock and this secret was kept for many years.

After the first chapter I nearly put this book down. The American spellings and the faux English expressions (most of which I have never heard) fitted very awkwardly into a very English context.
However once the story gets going these quibbles can be ignored, and the tale unfolds at pace. As I finished the main story I would have given four stars, but the author’s notes at the end justified the few doubts I had on the way through, especially the inclusion of the royal family.
Yes there are impossible details, such as driving from Yorkshire to Buckinghamshire in a few hours, via Blackpool!, when there were no motorways. But the strength of the story overrides these and it was a most interesting read.
