1940, Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire.
Three very different women are recruited to the mysterious Bletchley Park, where the best minds in Britain train to break German military codes.
Vivacious debutante Osla has the dashing Prince Philip of Greece sending her roses – but she burns to prove herself as more than a society girl, working to translate decoded enemy secrets. Self-made Mab masters the legendary codebreaking machines as she conceals old wounds and the poverty of her East-End London upbringing. And shy local girl Beth is the outsider who trains as one of the Park’s few female cryptanalysts.
Seven years after they first meet, on the eve of the royal wedding between Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, disaster threatens. Osla, Mab and Beth are estranged, their friendship torn apart by secrets and betrayal. Yet now they must race against the clock to crack one final code together, before it’s too late, for them and for their country.

This book! It was completely engrossing! It was like a warm blanket that I could wrap around me and forget where I was! Each character was like someone I knew personally and their story of love, hardship, friendship and loss was my own story!
This is the tale of Osla, Mab and Beth, three young women from different backgrounds, who meet in Bletchley Park during the war and become best friends. Each of them has a particular trait that helps them to decipher the enigma machine that the Germans used to send decoded messages during the war! When disaster strikes their friendship seems to be broken forever. That is until one of them is locked up in an asylum with too many dangerous secrets to keep.
When she turns to her old friends for help, the girls have to put aside their grudges to expose a traitor who worked among them at Bletchley Park.
These women go through so much together it's heartbreaking!
The story alternates between two timelines, which I always find fascinating. One is set during the war and the other is set just days before the royal wedding between Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip takes place in 1947.
Needless to say, it had me cheering, crying, laughing and screaming in outrage with some of the characters. If you're a history buff you can't miss this one!
From the description of the girls' clothing to Glenn Miller's music and the language, the author did a phenomenal job of setting the mood!
Now please excuse me while I go find every other book Kate Quinn has ever written!
Can’t wait for the mini series now!

I am not quite sure I like public figures, still living & breathing, being used as characters in novels, particularly romantic ones.
However, I do like KQ's work & she is a good storyteller.
I am not summarising the book itself, I leave that to the synopsis, or to others.
Kate, if you are reading this - I must dispute a working class family living in Shoreditch would have a telephone - unheard of.
Also, Osla's flat would be the size of a 'broom cupboard', not a boot cupboard - boots are kept in a room...
A few other Americanisms, but you write for a wide geographical audience.
Some US authors really grate, but not you.
I do not mean that in an condescending, patronising manner, just as a fact.
This is an enjoyable read, as all Kate's books are.
A very talented lady she is.
This story starts directly after the war, and jumps between two time frames.
I found it a brilliant, well woven story, full of colour.
I only wish I had read this prior to visiting Bletchley, a great read if you enjoy books of enduring friendship, the war and going adversity
In modern parlance, this book will doubtlessly fall under that belittling heading: "Chick Lit". (In the 1960's we might have labelled it "Bird Lit"!)
Not really my cup of tea I'm afraid.
Even so well done to the author for the many months of hard endeavour in completing this novel. One piece of advice, if I may be permitted, would be to liaise with a British university and befriend an English professor therein, who could be willing to proof read your MSS in the first instance and correct your usage of the colloquial English language. Don't worry overmuch at UK reviews that harp on about this; the English kids of today are becoming Americanised; ergo in 20-years time you'll be a very fashionable lady.
