Buried in the Ring help pages, is the below nugget:
"Note: To maximize battery life, your Ring Video Doorbell 3 does not begin its automated recharging cycle until the battery reaches about 90%. That means that Ring Video Doorbell 3 units connected to solar recharging units or internal wiring will not see increases in battery percentages until the battery falls below 90%."
Mine, only showed as connected when BELOW 85% - after it has enabled the automated recharging. iPhones do something similar, to preserved the Lithium Ion battery, only charging above 85% when you need it.
Initially, I had a dead unit, which was confirmed with a multimeter. However, when I got the replacement, it would not show as 'Connected' in the App... because I'd charged the battery to 100% whilst waiting for the replacement! If you want to see it 'Connected' immediately after install, make sure your battery is below 85% to force the automated recharging to be active immediately.

I disliked the information provided regarding how the user knows the charger is working and is functional.
I installed the solar charger following the instructions. (Please only order this solar charger for the Ring 3 and 3 plus)
On my phone app i clicked devices, selected the doorbell and clicked on the battery icon on the top right. This shows you the devices health and information.
The solar status showed as NOT CONNECTED!
I thought oh no there is a problem!
My battery level was 96% has it had recently been charged, but the solar status wasn't connected. Surely it should say connected. So i searched the web for answers finding lots of people reporting that this charger doesn't work. I followed lots of advice that i had found on the ring website. I uninstalled the app, i checked connections, i factory reset the doorbell, I moved my router nearer the doorbell to improve WiFi. I basically wasted a week of my time thinking this charger doesn't work and feeling ripped off!
I then came across someone saying the battery only charges when it's below 90 so i thought I would wait. I did and at 88% it still wasn't connected. I noticed the device health was checked the last time the camera was activated a few hours prior and that may have been at 90% battery level, so i selected to live view to force the doorbell to refresh the health check. It still showed as not connected. Then a few more hours of sunlight and another refresh of the helath and the battery was at 87% and finally connected!!!!!! Yes!!! It does work.
So please don't worry if it doesn't show as connected on the solar status. Don't waste your time like i did uninstalling and resetting and checking everything over and over again. Just wait until the battery is below 90%, let the charger have some sun to activate it and refresh the health check by viewing a live feed. Let the information process and check the status again.

As for how good the charger is I can't answer that until I know if it saves me taking the battery out to charge. At the moment it is keeping a stable charge and going up slowly through the day depending on use and the amount of sun light (luckily my front door area gets a lot of sunlight). We are in January at the moment so I expect in Summer with more daylight hours it gets more time to charge. The battery level decreases in the evening & night time and goes down to around 84 or 85%, then by the end of the afternoon its back to 86 or 87%. We are in lockdown so its not getting used much at the moment. I expect on the whole once summer comes as well it should keep the battery charged up.
Early days yet to say, but overall I am happy with my purchase. If you asked me a few days ago I would have said don't buy this, but that was because I thought it didn't work.
Hope this information helps a few people and saves on all the messing around that I did. Maybe if i installed it when my battery level was at 80% I wouldn't have had an issue. My problem was the battery was over 90% charged already. I think thats why some people say this works and some don't. I expect Ring gets a lot of customers who return this solar charger. I was almost one of them!

What a waste of time does not charge it up at all and the sun has been on it for to days in the mornings really disappointing was hoping it would keep it top up i am down to 95% 2 half days but saying that I dont even no if it is working as when I look at the health check it says add solar charger to make batter life last longerRecensito nel Regno Unito il 1 agosto 2020
It is solid and looks well made and easy to install
Part 2 ok after having it for a bit it does work and slow down the drain on the battery but never charges it up even after no use for 3 days but I am happy with it now
