P.K. Dick indeed had excellent vision of the future of the "western world". This already classic, part 2 of the Valis trilogy is loaded with subtle questions and is fun to read.

5,0 su 5 stelle The Spiritual Legacy of PKD
Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 19 novembre 2022

The second of his spiritual trilogy, Dick tells an engaging story while ruminating on the nature of religion, spiritual truth and the essential meaning of life on earth. That Dick is a genius is beyond question. This work is essential reading to all PKD fans.

4,0 su 5 stelle The gospel according to Philip ?

My theological upbringing (what with being a preachers kid) wasn’t strong enough to allow me to evaluate/criticize some of the authors deep background on religion in this book. That being said, things fit together somewhat logically and created quite an interesting picture of the second coming beginning on a far away planet and returning to an Earth where the Communists and Catholic/Islamic Church run the show.

It’s also the deeply personal story of a few folks who make their way through the story; although it’s often challenging to figure out where and when they actually are. All in all a worthwhile ready during the Christmas season.

5,0 su 5 stelle P.D.K.- Always ahead of the curve.

Actually, this is the only other _Valis_ novel. There was supposed to have been a third, but Dick died before it was finished. _The Transmigration of Timothy Archer_, while good, is not properly part of the _Valis_ trilogy.

This book, while set in the far future, does continue the specific themes introduced in _Valis_, and reference is made back to some of the specific characters. You see, this is the time when VALIS, the Logos, the greater face of God, or whatever name you choose to limit it by, breaks through into our "black iron prison" to reclaim it and banish the Empire and the black magician behind it.

I admit that the story takes 50 or 60 pages to get up to speed, but by that time the IDEAS that are the real value of P.D.K.'s writing begin to surface. For instance, the idea of the "Hermetic Transform" and how the microcosm and macrocossm can interpenetrate and become One- and how to God time can run backwards. Pretty deep stuff compared to most of the semi-literate pap that is published nowdays.

What really leaped out at me though was the fact that Dick wrote of the Torah as an interactive, holographic, computer code. It predicts the future because it is the blueprint for creation that even God refers back to. He wrote this in 1981- _The Bible Code_ wasn't published until 1997. Talk about being "ahead of the curve."

5,0 su 5 stelle My favorite PKD novel
Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 24 giugno 2016

Loved it from start to finish. Dick tells a science fiction imagining of the Second Coming from a Gnostic Jewish perspective, and manages to make it work. While "VALIS" was a sort of fictionalized autobiography of Dick's own encounter with... something... in 1974, "The Divine Invasion" is more a standard action sci-fi novel.

On a technical level, this is probably one of his stronger works. Anyone familiar with PKD will acknowledge that for his skills as a storyteller, he was terrible when it came to putting together elegant paragraphs or poetic sentences, as well as he's tendency to write poorly executed dialogue/character interactions. "The Divine Invasion", while not perfect, shows tremendous improvement in Dick's abilities.

Violence: from what I recall, there is only one truly violent scene in the book, and it's essentially a flashback of a car accident.

Sex: Nothing extreme, but it's obvious that Dick liked dark-haired women with large breasts.

If you're a fan of Philip K. Dick, science fiction, or religion, "The Divine Invasion" might be just the book you were looking for.

5,0 su 5 stelle Philip K. Dick updates the Charles Williams novel
Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 16 maggio 2015
Acquisto verificato
Philip K. Dick (PKD) presents a more coherent story here than in VALIS, the first book of the "trilogy." Part of what made the first book interesting was the unreliable narrator. Here, we get more reliable narrators but a less reliable timeline (again on purpose, to good effect). I think one can safely skip reading VALIS before this book, though it did help for understanding Herb's change in behavior toward Rybys.

This book drops references to western hermeticism and assumes a modest background in Kabbalah and Greek mythology. It reminds me of a Charles Williams (CW) novel, in how supernatural forces enter ordinary life (ordinary _future_ life at least -- with space colonies, flying cars, and vibro-lutes). CW goes through an impressive effort to stick to a _message_ of Christian orthodoxy, despite a _medium_ of the occult. PKD has no such attachment to orthodoxy, but this frees him to present the Good News in entirely new ways. He uses the _language_ of Christian orthodoxy (among other "doxies"), to convey its hopefulness, without doctrinal attachments.

5,0 su 5 stelle One possible interruptation of reality
Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 20 gennaio 2020

I've finished pkd's trilogy and do not view these works as science fiction, but rather as enlightened insights, visions , epiphanies. illuminating and exposing commonly perceived experience as being of another non-material, superimposed dimension, a simulacra . Human existence, indeed all of perceptible existence, is in fact projections of extraordinary, supranatural forces the nature of which appear as both 'good' and 'evil' to westernized people. pkd's world, I believe, is profoundly gnostic. Humanity has indeed fallen, but may, by the agency of divine intervention , in a select and small part only perhaps, be restored to 'God'. Why? To separate the wheat from the chaff ? Very perplexing.

5,0 su 5 stelle Fetishistic Brilliance
Recensito negli Stati Uniti 🇺🇸 il 13 luglio 2012

Herein Dick re-imagines Christian theology (God in pieces, fallen angel adversary, God made human) in a sprawling multi-layered story that could arguably be called "science fiction". I don't share his fetish for trying to fit reality into those myths, but watching someone of his intellect and writing ability try to do that is interesting (even if I think that he was quite surely losing his mind at this point). It's a good read but not one of my favorites. As a mind-f**** experience that will twist your thinking into knots, it's up there with the strangest of Dick's art or anyone else's.

It's SLIGHTLY more coherent, SLIGHTLY more palatable than VALIS, but still pretty strange meat at the end of your fork here. He was taking his personal experiences and manias and spinning the wildest, most imaginative tales out of them. He has real insight into the nature of religion and into the truths that helped to create these myths, and that makes the book interesting.

5,0 su 5 stelle It's Dick

I like PKD and that's why I purchased the book. Type is fine, pages are fine, has a cover. I'm not here to review the book but the product provided, which is decent and very much a book. Contains letters, numbers, and punctuation appropriate in the telling of a story, on materials that are able to hold ink. Arrived on time and undamaged.

4,0 su 5 stelle It’s more of his heavy stuff

I enjoyed the first book VALIS better but it was nice to see where the story went from one perspective to it focused on different people but the concept is still there.
