What a journey! I feel like I've been transported back in time (1939) and have just returned to the present after reading the last page!

This book! It was completely engrossing! It was like a warm blanket that I could wrap around me and forget where I was! Each character was like someone I knew personally and their story of love, hardship, friendship and loss was my own story!

This is the tale of Osla, Mab and Beth, three young women from different backgrounds, who meet in Bletchley Park during the war and become best friends. Each of them has a particular trait that helps them to decipher the enigma machine that the Germans used to send decoded messages during the war! When disaster strikes their friendship seems to be broken forever. That is until one of them is locked up in an asylum with too many dangerous secrets to keep.
When she turns to her old friends for help, the girls have to put aside their grudges to expose a traitor who worked among them at Bletchley Park.
These women go through so much together it's heartbreaking!

The story alternates between two timelines, which I always find fascinating. One is set during the war and the other is set just days before the royal wedding between Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip takes place in 1947.

Needless to say, it had me cheering, crying, laughing and screaming in outrage with some of the characters. If you're a history buff you can't miss this one!
From the description of the girls' clothing to Glenn Miller's music and the language, the author did a phenomenal job of setting the mood!
Now please excuse me while I go find every other book Kate Quinn has ever written!
Can’t wait for the mini series now!

3,0 su 5 stelle Author needs a British editor

WHat spoiled a good story was the constant reliance on Americanisms. Not just US spellings but lack of infinitives, eg ' I will write you, will you write me back?. ' She looked out the window' . No sign of 'to' or 'of'. My gripe is this is supposed to be British based so a good editor would have changed sidewalk, sanitarium etc. Not sure whether middle class Mayfair debs really did use language like 'spiffing , bally and fizzing'. Interesting subject though. Enjoyed the book , just annoyed with the language.

I can barely believe I looked through my Kindle library, found this book & began to read on 10 April 2021- the day after Prince Philip died.
I am not quite sure I like public figures, still living & breathing, being used as characters in novels, particularly romantic ones.

However, I do like KQ's work & she is a good storyteller.
I am not summarising the book itself, I leave that to the synopsis, or to others.

Kate, if you are reading this - I must dispute a working class family living in Shoreditch would have a telephone - unheard of.

Also, Osla's flat would be the size of a 'broom cupboard', not a boot cupboard - boots are kept in a room...

A few other Americanisms, but you write for a wide geographical audience.
Some US authors really grate, but not you.
I do not mean that in an condescending, patronising manner, just as a fact.

This is an enjoyable read, as all Kate's books are.
A very talented lady she is.

5,0 su 5 stelle Beauty and Brains to defeat Germany

Kate Quinn has delivered a 'tour de force' with this novel. The detail, research, and invention are all impressive and success is assured here. The subject concerns World War 2 when German submarines were destroying thousands of tons of shipping and so threatening to bring Britain to its knees, the only nation in the war standing between civilisation and Nazi domination. To combat this horrific threat Bletchley Park, a large house in copious grounds, was set up in Buckinghamshire to assemble brilliant men and women, many from the ivory towers of Oxford and Cambridge, mathematicians, scientists and others who developed a flair for breaking German codes. Osla, Mabel and Bethan were three young ladies of very different backgrounds. Osla a Canadian debutante with upper class connections and, through the war, a girl friend of Prince Philipp of Greece when he was ashore, and god daughter of Earl Mountbatten. Mabel, or Mab as she styled herself, was from a poor London East End background who dropped into this life by chance, but with aspiration. Bethan, now Beth, was even more extraordinary. Her mother, a religious zealot, treated her so badly and thought her stupid but it happened that instinctively she could solve crosswords quicker than anyone and was recruited and put to work in the most important code breaking hut. The author has brilliantly used a great many facts and woven them in with her own imagination to produce a riveting story of tension, authoritarian excess and ultimately a spy novel. The traitor at Bletchley is not uncovered till late in the book and not before remarkable happenings with regard to romance and Beth being locked away in a mental institution to prevent her revealing the traitor. A wonderful novel, eminently readable, which will keep you on your toes for the considerable duration.

Three women met at the start of WW2, little to nothing in common other than Bletchley Park.
This story starts directly after the war, and jumps between two time frames.
I found it a brilliant, well woven story, full of colour.
I only wish I had read this prior to visiting Bletchley, a great read if you enjoy books of enduring friendship, the war and going adversity

3,0 su 5 stelle Two Nations divided by a common language ...

A somewhat lightweight treatment of a very heavy subject. Although the premise is (arguably) a good one, I cannot help but think this subject has been covered extensively since the war (WWII, that is), not least by Robert Harris' "ENIGMA".

In modern parlance, this book will doubtlessly fall under that belittling heading: "Chick Lit". (In the 1960's we might have labelled it "Bird Lit"!)
Not really my cup of tea I'm afraid.
Even so well done to the author for the many months of hard endeavour in completing this novel. One piece of advice, if I may be permitted, would be to liaise with a British university and befriend an English professor therein, who could be willing to proof read your MSS in the first instance and correct your usage of the colloquial English language. Don't worry overmuch at UK reviews that harp on about this; the English kids of today are becoming Americanised; ergo in 20-years time you'll be a very fashionable lady.

A bit long but what a story. The whole section in the asylum made me angry, uncomfortable and worried but I had to read on. The central mystery isn’t really introduced until quite a long way in when you’re already invested in the characters. I found myself thinking about the situation even when I wasn’t reading the book! By pure chance I started reading this on the day of Prince Philip’s funeral, totally unaware he’s a main player in the narrative - although not a main character. I am really interested in history but not keen on ‘historical novels’ ! However this was different. Read it, you ‘ ll love it and learn about our recent past. Did you know lobotomies were still practised in this country as rencently as 1973! !

3,0 su 5 stelle Overlong, unevenly paced and with a completely unnecessary royal romance subplot.

The premise bills The Rose Code as a woman-centred high-stakes WWII thriller set against the backdrop of Bletchley Park with three estranged women, all formerly friends, forced to reunite in the name of national security. Not only did the female code breaking focus intrigue me but the promise of Kate Quinn shedding light on the secretive Buckinghamshire estate and its invaluable contribution to the war effort. Sadly the reality didn’t quite deliver and at over six hundred pages the result is a patchy mix of historical fiction and romance with a rather belated but rousing denouement in a novel that is easily two hundred pages longer than it needs to be.

Set across two timelines and spanning WWII, the major component of the story begins in 1940 when two women meet on the train, both due to report to Bletchley station. Vivacious Canadian debutante, Osla Kendall, is committed to joining the war effort and proving she is more than the ‘silly deb’ that many take her for. Worlds apart but just as resolute is striking Shoreditch girl, Mab Churt, who is determined to escape poverty and make a better life for her little sister. Billeted together at the home of unassuming Bethan Finch, a shy girl continually undermined by her manipulative mother who is a whizz at cracking crosswords, they soon help her gain employment alongside them where she flourishes as one of the few female cryptanalysts. However a furious showdown on D-Day sees the friendship splinter apart and all three women, each feeling bitter and betrayed, go their separate ways. Whilst the characterisation of the three women is disappointingly unoriginal they are well-drawn with Quinn doing an excellent job of making their individual motivations clear. Nearly four years later a coded message is delivered to the homes of Osla, now an engaged Tatler columnist, and Mab, a married mother living in York, in which they both discover that Beth was interned at Clockwell Sanitarium and claims the reason for it was due to her discovery of a traitor in their midst at Bletchley Park selling secrets to Russia. Deciding to put hostilities aside, along with reservations about Beth’s sanity, Osla and Mab renew their frosty alliance and travel to Clockwell, little knowing that discovering the identity of the traitor involves breaking one final code together.

Whilst the introduction of the three protagonists and establishing their places at Bletchley Park necessitates a slow start, I do think with rather less colour on the romance of Osla it could have been snappier and more compelling. The novel includes real people and I found the inclusion of the Duke of Edinburgh (formerly Prince Philip of Greece) in a significant romantic subplot with Osla that was completely irrelevant to the main plot both disconcerting and in poor taste. The novel could easily have done without it and been reduced to a more readable length. An afterword clarifies the inspirations behind some of the books characters and which events were entirely fictitious. Kate Quinn does an excellent job of conveying the pressures of secrecy surrounding the nature of the work, even between colleagues within Bletchley Park, and the toll of having to be lie or be evasive in order not to break the Official Secrets Act. In addition she establishes a believable sense of camaraderie that is well-drawn to the point of inspirational and makes profoundly apparent the numerous ethical dilemmas of handling top secret material that could impact directly on family or a friend’s loved ones. What I found far less convincing is the friendship between all three women and for me they never made a convincing transition from being thrown together and having to develop a friendship of sorts through lack of choice to becoming deeply bonded firm friends. Their reunion after four years of silence feels as much through their commitment and respect for their work, than loyalty to each another.

5,0 su 5 stelle Bletchley Park
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 6 aprile 2021

Superbly written and well researched, historic fiction at its best. Atmospheric, full of suspense and emotions, the story transfers the reader to another word, that of codebreakers, cryptanalysts, typists, translators of Bletchley Park. The three protagonists take you there, you’ll read about their commitment to their work, their friendship and fall out, their love and their fears. Even though these three women are from different backgrounds, with different personalities, having different strengths, weaknesses and skills, being part of the Bletchley Park team brings them together. Working there is exhausting and stressful, but also fulfilling and fun. Their friendship is tried but eventually, when a common goal needs to be achieved their friendship and shared values win. So far this is the author’s best WWII novel.

4,0 su 5 stelle Good but could have been condensed

I struggled at first with this book as there was so much irrelevant detail for the 50% - but I was glad I persevered as it had quite a tense ending.

Interesting connection with Prince Philip and if you have ever visited Bletchley Park the descriptions will resonate.

There could have been a little more detail on the work that was undertaken there as it was kept secret for so long. I would like to have read more about the work of Alan Turing.

Still worth reading - but be prepared for a slow start and a long read 600+ pages - which is why I suggest that it could have been condensed.

Interesting that the author was American, so she had to do quite a bit of research - you will spot a few Americanisms.
