Skip this book in the series-awful!

I love Kate Quinn, but this book was awful. Very dull and just did not move forward. I stopped reading it around halfway, I went that long because I know Kate Quinn is an amazing writer, I was hoping the book would get better but it did not. If you’re going to read the series, you could actually skip this book without missing a beat in the Empress of the Seven Hills book.

I made it halfway through this book, pretty much suffering all the way through. Every once in a while something exciting would happen and then it would get back to boring. I have read Kate Quinn before and enjoyed her writing, but this storyline just went nowhere for me.

I couldn't even finish this book. I really like kate Quinn as a writer so I tried to read this book but it was so confusing I just stopped in the middle. Her first book in the series was great but don't bother with this one. Very disappointed.

Women in the ancient world?

One reviewer has said she can't comment on how accurate Quinn's portrayal of Rome in AD69 is as she knows little about the era. I have to say I found a few niggling details in this attempt to aim a novel at a female version of the male readership of Scarrow et al, ~ battles, military hardware and the legions, Etc. (Rosemary Sutcliff it's not.).
The book unfortunately reminded me too much of Philippa-Gregory-with-additional-gore, though it is readable in a beach-book kind of way. The accent is on the four female characters, the Cornelias ~ prima, secunda, tertia and quarta, to be Latin about it. At least Quinn tries to reduce her reader's confusion somewhat by granting the two sisters and their cousins alternative names, as their individual 'voices' are not that distinct.
The year of the four emperors was a pivotal turning point in the history of the Empire. Quinn has chosen to reflect it through the eyes and actions of her characters, but they are too liberated (in our post-60s sense). Freedom in the ancient world on both a personal and a societal level was strictly regimented, in both Greece and Rome. I thought there was no way a woman would have been permitted to be present in a war zone, as Marcella is portrayed as an observer at the battle of Bedriacum. (She is the character who eventually turns into the miserable figure of Domitian's wife.) However, a fellow Classical (Romanist) student informs me that although women in Republican times did not accompany their men there was, apparently, a senatorial debate in 20AD which shifted things a bit so during the era of the Empire they did. Agrippina the Elder gained a reputation for being fierce and assertive when she accompanied her husband on military campaigns in Germany and, by dressing her young son Caligula as a Roman soldier, won sympathy from troops during a mutiny in the field. She also exercised decisive leadership and authority to stop the demolition of a bridge that would have trapped the Roman forces on the other side of the Rhine in 15AD.
So, elite WAGs were found on military campaigns.

But that old mistake about the word 'vomitorium' surfaces, yet again. Now, I don't trust Wiki ~ and esp. not for seriously academic stuff ~ but I deem it's correct about the tired old 'vomitorium' myth, tho' haven't double-checked its sources, but I am puzzled at the offer of the 'bathhouse' for Roman guests as described by this author. No way would Romans accept that! The verb 'vomere' translates as 'to spew out', which makes sense when applied to rushed exits. A quick look-up would have given Ms Quinn the information that the term 'vomitorium' does not appear until the C4thAD (according to Wiki, [...] although I won't vouch for their date). Quinn wrote a little scene where emperor Vitellius, according to her portrayal, indulges in an OTT wedding feast at the house of one of her protagonists: 'gustatio', 'fercula', followed by exotic dishes straight out of The 'Satyricon', and he requests the vomitorium (p. 215). The patricians are found wanting ~ they not only never make use of such but are 'only' able to offer the use of a bath house. AND the drunken emperor sways out of the 'triclinium' still chewing on a 'sweet-cooked dormouse' before the advent of the 'mensae secundae'. All the ancient chestnuts are trotted out ...

Roman bathhouses were for cleanliness and recreation. Nothing to do with what amounts to bulimia, but the myth persists. They might have suggested the latrines, which were located near the kitchens, but more than likely a slave would have to oblige with a suitable vessel. 'Vomitoria' were actually corridor steps to access the circuses and arenas. People leaving gave the impression of being 'disgorged' from the amphitheatres as they poured down the steps and out onto the streets when the show was over. Perhaps the American Quinn thought 'bath house' the same as an ancient Roman version of 'bathroom'. I suppose historical accuracy is not her particular priority but faults are annoying and do make you view the material with suspicion, or even give up.
OTOH, maybe her core readership doesn't care, doesn't give a fig for historical accuracy. And maybe I was so jaded by the narrative, I wasn't paying enough attention. Sorry! One & a half stars, max.

oops I wrote a review and said I enjoyed the first book, Empress of Rome...guess it was the Mitress of Rome, That was the one I enjoyed. Didnt care for Daughter's of Rome at all. Slow, and just not interesting
