I read Kate Quinn's previous novel, Mistress of Rome, which was excellent and un-put-downable so had high expectations of Daughters of Rome. The book is divided into four parts, each representing an Emperor's period on the throne of ancient Rome, and how four women lives are affected by the constant change of Emperors (historically known as The Year of Four Emperors.). Perhaps my high expectations was the problem because, although Part One started out well, by the end of Part Two, I gave up through boredom. Kate Quinn writes very well but the story just did not keep me interested enough to read through to the end. I can only hope that her next book returns to the quality of Mistress of Rome.

2,0 su 5 stelle Chick-lit, but NOT a historical novel
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 20 ottobre 2011
I selected "Daughters of Rome" to read and review because I was under the misapprehension that this was a historical novel. It is not a historical novel, which makes this one of the most difficult reviews I have ever written.

First of all, beyond one Jilly Cooper novel I have no experience of "chick-lit", so I cannot say whether this is a good or a bad book in the genre (except to say that it isn't as good as the Jilly Cooper novel I have read). Perhaps it will satisfy readers of that genre, although from a literary point of view it depresses me that readers of chick-lit must have such low expectations. The characters are distinctly one-dimensional, and Kate Quinn has a habit of writing incomplete sentences.

But enough of that - I would not presume to pass any qualified judgement on the book within the genre in which it so blatantly falls.

What I can say, however, is that a reader should in no way embark on "Daughters of Rome" in the belief that it falls with the historical fiction genre. The author's understanding of early Imperial Rome is poor, and her characterisation, however many dimensions she believes she has given her protagonists, is so far removed from what was likely, or even possible, for young women in ancient Rome as to be entirely unbelievable. (For example, the idea that a sixteen-year-old patrician woman could mingle, unescorted (or even escorted) with charioteers and horse-trainers is ludicrous.) Also, no writer of historical fiction should, nowadays, be allowed to get away with the idea that the Romans had a room called a `vomitorium' in their houses.

I am going to give "Daughters of Rome" two stars, because I feel it would be unfair to give it only one when it is actually in a genre with which I am unfamiliar.

2,0 su 5 stelle maybe it was just me
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 12 agosto 2011
maybe I wasnt in the right frame of mind...but I just couldnt get into it. I actually gave up after about 50 pages, it didn't grab my attention and I couldn't find the enthusiasm to pick it up again once I put it down.

I loved the first book Mistress of Rome and oculdnt put it down when I started to read this. But this one has the opposite effect on me.

I kept getting confused between the 4 main characters of the girls...not helping the fact they all had the same name and I couldnt remember who was who.

I may try again with this in the next couple of weeks, so I may change my mind. I am not convinced thats it not just me being a pain and not in the mood for this.

Sorry that this review isn't more helpful but it wasn't easy reading from the start.

2,0 su 5 stelle Too Pedantic

I expected an exciting follow up to the first Daughters of Rome book, which was engaging and entertaining. The writer just keeps repeating conversation about the same subjects without any depth or nuance. Characters are cardboard. I bought the 3rd and 4th books as well and hope they deliver a better story, better plot. Otherwise, whole series will be a waste of $.

2,0 su 5 stelle Somewhat Entertaining but Unimpressive

This book had a plot that was entertaining enough for me to want to finish it, but I found the characters and writing style unimpressive. Quinn needs to learn how to show what is happening, not tell.

The beginning of the story was confusing, with many names used before the reader understands the context. It takes a while to get into the rhythm of the book and work out who each person is.

The point of view changes frequently between the four main characters as well as others, often from paragraph to paragraph. It is exceptionally difficult to follow these shifts. It doesn't help that the four sisters/cousins are essentially interchangeable in their voice. It is nearly impossible to tell which point of view the story is being told from if it is not explicitly spelled out.

I was planning on giving this book three stars, but had to drop it down to two for the insensitive and cursory way that suicide is discussed by the four main characters at one point. One of them is supposedly in a suicidal depression, but it is treated with such an exceptionally flippant manner through amateurish writing that the author almost seems to be making fun of it. Rape is treated with equal insensitivity toward the end of the book through the comments of one of the sisters. While this could have been considered part of her characterization in a well-written book, the women are so underdeveloped that it seems completely out of place and inappropriate.

The biggest annoyance for me was that huge spans of time and important events were told through inadequate flashbacks. All of the sudden, a new chapter starts and everything is different. The author then has one of the characters have a quick flashback to summarize the changes. It seemed like kind of a cop-out, Quinn just tells you that things changed and you should just accept that the subsequent situations and actions make sense because of it.

Last complaint: The main characters were completely unrealistic portrayals of women at the time. They had far too much power, attitude, and influence to convince me that they were truly living in ancient Rome. There was also little character development - everyone was defined in the beginning and from then on had little to no growth. There was also little insight into their inner motivations except for the crude italicized sentences presented as their thoughts.

If you want an entertaining read, pick up "Mistress of Rome" instead. There is much more action and it will keep you wanting to know what is going to happen next. Personally, I found the flaws in "Mistress" could be overlooked, allowing me to just enjoy the ride. I enjoyed it enough to look forward to the forthcoming sequel, but not enough to want to re-read it. I feel that now that I know how it ends, the excitement would not be enough to outweigh the problems. Definitely addictive the first time around, though, unlike "Daughters".

2,0 su 5 stelle Just barely okay.

Lots of liberties taken with historical figures, especially with an Empress. Most of Cornelia Secunda's actions throughout the second half of the book come completely out of left field, almost as if it were a different person from the first half of the book.
