I ordered a size 15 4E. I'd read all the reviews and the Velcro straps are too short just like every review says. i bought the same shoe in the lace up version and am happy with them. I bought some velcro strips from wal mart to add under the strap to increase the surface area holding them shut. they work ok. these shoes are comfortable in lace up and velcro. The lace up shoes got 5 stars. the Velcro 3 because of the short straps. I've had the lace up shoes for about a year. they are still in pretty good shape. i mostly only wear them on weekends though. i wear work boots/shoes during the week.

for what it's worth... I'm a 29 year old man. The closer i get to 30 the more my hair is graying and hairline receding. Earlier this year i decided nike shocks were for young people and it was time for me to get some sensible old man shoes. the lace up shoes i bought are black. the Velcro strap shoes are bone colored. The Velcro bone colored shoes are definitely old man shoes. so much so that some of my friends judge me a bit, but in a funny way. i got less judgement from my black lace up shoes. Although my 19 year old sister judged me pretty hard on the black ones too. She's a real hater sometimes. i waited for both pair to get below $40 to buy them. That being said, i would feel like a real jabroni if i paid more than $40 for either pair.

A really solid American made Velcro walking shoe

I've flirted with the idea of getting a pair of Velcro walking shoes for a long time. I try to exercise every day via walking about a mile at a time, and now that winter is getting closer I needed a pair of walking shoes rather than the sandals I wore all summer.

I did a little Google searching to find a pair of walking shoes that were made in America and used Velcro straps and these are what I found.

I've never bought shoes online before, but I'm really happy with this purchase. The shoes are really solid after walking about three or four miles so far in them. They have good support, fit well, and aren't that hard to get used to.

The Velcro straps work really well on my pair. You have to put a little gumption in pulling them over, but they stay attached and allow the shoes to keep a firm grip on your foot. I like my shoes to fit really tight, and these are about perfect for my taste.

The only thing I'd like to be different would be the amount of bounce they give when walking. I've worn other walking shoes that add a lot more bounce to your step and make it seem like you're walking on air. These have a good feel, but the heel is a lot more solid and doesn't quite have that bounce to it.

That being said, they're still really comfortable to walk in. I think they look really cool, too. I don't like a lot of flair in my shoes, and I love their bold black look. I think they're really sharp, to be honest.

If you're looking for a Velcro walking shoe and want an American made pair, I'd say these are a pretty good choice.

The only reason that this shoe doesn't rank a 5 star from me is an issue that I have with the construction details that affect wear ability. The issue with the MW812 is that the maker chose to minimize the top line of the shoe so that it doesn't cover the tongue properly. This is an issue with almost all modern shoes and boots. If you look for old pictures from the early 1900's until about the 1990's notice how close together the sides are. They almost cover the entire tongue. This feature allowed the foot to be cradled in the shoe aiding in lateral support as well as torsional rigidity. The modern method has the left and right side of the shoe trying to work in conjunction with the tongue to accomplish the same thing. It doesn't work as well which results in stressed feet. This lowering of the side is more pronounced on the MW812 than it is on the MW577. I find that the MW577 folds over the top of the foot to a greater degree than the MW812. The major trade off for me is that the foot bed of the MW812 is much more comfortable and gives more support than the MW577 does. Therefore I have bought 2 pairs of the discontinued MW812 shoes based on the foot bed alone and the fact that they are so affordable now. I am getting beyond the short side issue by not wearing my orthotics in them like I can do in my MW577's and I am stretching the straps by readjusting the straps periodically throughout the day.

New Balance 812s

I've been wearing these NB shoes for about one year now and would like to provide some feedback. They still are very comfortable shoes and I wear them almost every day at some point. The only complaint that I have with these, and other NB shoes is that you cannot keep the shoe clean below the leather. Another words, most, if not all athletic shoes, are wrapped around using the same material that the bottom of the shoe is made of. This material yellows after time and to keep it white, like the rest of the shoe, is near impossible. I have spoken to NB a number of times and they suggest using dawn liquid, or soft scrub, or cleaning wipes, etc. but nothing really works well. Remember when we use to put our dirty sneakers in the wash? They would come out white as new. Well, you can't do that with NB shoes and besides, they still do not come clean around the edges of the shoe if you decide to put them through a wash cycle. That's it! Nice shoes...hard to keep completely clean.

Would be a "5" if more velcro on straps

I have used New Balance for years and quality and fit have been big pluses. I have developed a peripheral neuropathy and it is difficult for me to tie shoe laces, so I been looking for velcro straps. I agree with many other reviewers that there is a design flaw. The strap has to be pulled tight nearly all the way to the other side in order for it to attach. Fortunately, I have a medium width foot and these shoes fit, but with no room to spare. I also am careful to choose lighter socks, not thick, cushioned socks. Occasionally, the lower strap comes undone but is easily reattached. The shoes are very comfortable and enjoyable for long walks for exercise as well as for everyday getting around. They appear to be very well made. I'm glad I got them, but also lucky they fit me. Probably best to try on in a store or check the return policy if purchased by Web. I would rate them a "5" if the velcro area were a bit larger.

Old Man Shoes - but that's OK

These are Old Man Shoes - it's OK, I'm an old man - and some of us are just too crotchedy to tie our laces ten times a day. This was my problem when I was four, and now it's my problem again.

These are not running shoes. The main feature is the velcro closers, which make it quick to go out for a walk to the mailbox or down to the Village for the Early Bird Special. They are not expertly engineered such as my Brooks Beast sneakers, which are much more sophisticated and supportive for all day use or running. Rather these are just very easy to get on and off, plastic uppers, rather simplistic design. I did appreciate they are available in wide 2E sizes, which gained me a better fit. So that's the story - have to go now, Early Bird time, meatloaf tonight!.

Finally, a Shoe that Works

I have been battling with plantar fasciitus for the past year, and no matter what I did, nothing seemed to help. I even got the inserts recommended by the doctor, but still the pain was continuing. Finally, I bought these New Balance shoes and pulled the velcro straps tight, giving the me the relief I was seeking. I confirmed the relief for approximately a week, and subsequently have purchased four more pairs from Amazon. I have not had any foot pain for over three months. This may not be the case for everyone that suffers, but I have to tell you that for me, these shoes saved the day. It still behooves one to be careful, give your feet lots of rest, and be careful, but if you're looking for shoes that help, look to New Balance. And, the price is usually better on Amazon than it is anywhere else.

I love these shoes so much I bought them again. And then I bought them a third. And then I bought them a fourth time. And two more times after that! I'm not kidding. I wear the black pair or the white pair almost whenever I wear shoes. When I wear them out, I simply replace them with the same shoes. Because THEY ARE PERFECT. Super comfortable & ridiculously easy to put on & off. (Only loafers, boaters or slippers that you just slip on & off could be easier -- and they give you nowhere near the comfort & support.) And GUESS WHAT? All my life I have never learned to tie my shoes "the right way." THANK GOD FOR VELCRO! And thank God New Balance just keeps cranking this same pair of shoes, year after year, decade after decade.

I Shoulda Listened to another Review

One reviewer said that the straps were too short. I really thought that didn't seem possible since I had purchased New Balance shoes before with velcro straps and they were plenty long. But the reviewer was right. You really have to pull the strap tight across your arch...and I am diabetic. That is just a no-no and excurciating after only a few minutes.

Luckily I had some white velcro straps exactly the width of the NB straps and I crafted an extension by folding a piece of the hooks and hooking to the end of the strap. Looks terrible but takes the pressure off the arch. It does not really seem the straps are too short so much as the velcro on the strap is not well positioned nor long enough.... No more NB for me. Propet makes a similar shoe and I have a pair...much better.
