The only reason that this shoe doesn't rank a 5 star from me is an issue that I have with the construction details that affect wear ability. The issue with the MW812 is that the maker chose to minimize the top line of the shoe so that it doesn't cover the tongue properly. This is an issue with almost all modern shoes and boots. If you look for old pictures from the early 1900's until about the 1990's notice how close together the sides are. They almost cover the entire tongue. This feature allowed the foot to be cradled in the shoe aiding in lateral support as well as torsional rigidity. The modern method has the left and right side of the shoe trying to work in conjunction with the tongue to accomplish the same thing. It doesn't work as well which results in stressed feet. This lowering of the side is more pronounced on the MW812 than it is on the MW577. I find that the MW577 folds over the top of the foot to a greater degree than the MW812. The major trade off for me is that the foot bed of the MW812 is much more comfortable and gives more support than the MW577 does. Therefore I have bought 2 pairs of the discontinued MW812 shoes based on the foot bed alone and the fact that they are so affordable now. I am getting beyond the short side issue by not wearing my orthotics in them like I can do in my MW577's and I am stretching the straps by readjusting the straps periodically throughout the day.

New Balance 812s

I've been wearing these NB shoes for about one year now and would like to provide some feedback. They still are very comfortable shoes and I wear them almost every day at some point. The only complaint that I have with these, and other NB shoes is that you cannot keep the shoe clean below the leather. Another words, most, if not all athletic shoes, are wrapped around using the same material that the bottom of the shoe is made of. This material yellows after time and to keep it white, like the rest of the shoe, is near impossible. I have spoken to NB a number of times and they suggest using dawn liquid, or soft scrub, or cleaning wipes, etc. but nothing really works well. Remember when we use to put our dirty sneakers in the wash? They would come out white as new. Well, you can't do that with NB shoes and besides, they still do not come clean around the edges of the shoe if you decide to put them through a wash cycle. That's it! Nice shoes...hard to keep completely clean.

Would be a "5" if more velcro on straps

I have used New Balance for years and quality and fit have been big pluses. I have developed a peripheral neuropathy and it is difficult for me to tie shoe laces, so I been looking for velcro straps. I agree with many other reviewers that there is a design flaw. The strap has to be pulled tight nearly all the way to the other side in order for it to attach. Fortunately, I have a medium width foot and these shoes fit, but with no room to spare. I also am careful to choose lighter socks, not thick, cushioned socks. Occasionally, the lower strap comes undone but is easily reattached. The shoes are very comfortable and enjoyable for long walks for exercise as well as for everyday getting around. They appear to be very well made. I'm glad I got them, but also lucky they fit me. Probably best to try on in a store or check the return policy if purchased by Web. I would rate them a "5" if the velcro area were a bit larger.

A good walking shoe for the flat-footed.

Bought this shoe because I am about as flat-footed as one can be. Walking for more than a few minutes can become a painful chore for me. The 'roll bar" feature of the shoe, along with unusually good construction, have made thing somewhat more comfortable. New Balance shoes come in a good selection of widths. Something difficult to find in a mid-priced shoe these days. I was pleasantly surprised.

However, I wish that I had ordered a pair one half size longer because the inside padding tends to push the foot forward into the toe box more than most shoes. The toes begin to feel a bit cramped after wearing the shoes for awhile.

Overall, I will say that New Balance appears to understand feet better than most shoe makers. Well worth the price.

New Balance Shoes Superb but need longer straps

I had some foot problems and the Podiatrist recommended I invest in New Balance shoes - that they were the best walking shoes on the market in his opinion. I have had New Balance in the past and agree but they do have one minor problem that I wish they would fix - they do not have long enough Velcro straps. The straps do not reach fully across the other part of the hook and eye arrangement on the shoe, leaving the rough under surface exposed, which tends to fray the cuffs of long pants if you are not wearing shorts. Come on New Balance, can't you spring for an extra inch or so of straps on your shoes - is it really that expensive to have the strap reach all the way across the shoe?? It affects not just this model, but many of the Velcro-style New Balance shoes. I have read similar comments on these pages with other styles of New Balance running and walking shoes. Other than that, they are superb shoes, especially if you have discomfort problems with your feet when walking long distances, like I do.

I just got these because I needed a good pair of walkers to help with plantar fasciitis, and I've always liked New Balance. They don't have that exaggerated arch support that most generic shoes have that those of use with low arches kind of despise. Also, they're comfortable and reasonable stylish, and they have removable insoles if you have some of your own that you want to use instead. New Balance also has a set of brands that are (mostly) made in the USA if that sort of thing is important, and this was one of them.

Good shoes -- straps too short

These shoes feel very good on sore feet. I put them on after I get back from long hikes to give my feet a rest. I usually wear lace-up shoes, but the velcro strap shoes are easier to get on and off sore feet. As many other reviewers have mentioned, the velcro straps really are too short -- I have to pull them too tight to get them to "grab." I am also familiar with the old New Balance 811, the model that preceded the 812. The 811 was better, but the 812 is very good -- after all, I just bought another pair.

I have been using this shoe ever since plantar fasciitis started about eight years ago. I credit this shoe plus orthotic inserts for curing the condition, and have used this shoe ever since. They last about two years. The only problem is the velcro straps. They are too long, and as the shoe breaks in, the straps get pulled out more and more, until they overhang and flap. I mark the desired length, and take the shoes to a cobbler who trims and stitches the cut ends.

I have bought these before and loved them. It may be that this time I got the narrow (B) width and it seems that the tabs are just a little short. They are much shorter the the previous pair, but my foot measures as a B. The shoes are extremely comfortable and fit perfectly. I would have given them 5 stars if not for the straps being just a tad short. If I could have given half stars, I would have made it a 4.5.

Good all around sneaker

I have been wearing New Balance sneakers almost exclusively except for hiking and summer sandals for over a decade. My feet are an odd size (8 4e) so the New Balance range of sizes work for me. Every couple of years New Balance changes its model designations so I was last using MW811 which was discontinued. After about six months my feet start hurting because of the sneakers cushioning breaking down so I replaced my MW811's with this MW812 model and they have performed fine though they seem a little expensive.
