Nice book but...

Original, flowing and full of imagination... however, in comparison to the film, I have found him rather disappointing. I expected more. The character of Iveine is completely different from that brought on the screens and not in a positive way: she is ill-tempered, mournful and insensitive. I generally like the books from which film and tv series are drawn so much more. Till now this is the only case in which the contrary has happened. As far as the link, it should be specified that the ebook is only in english.

Perchè non c'è in lingua italiana il libro in formato ebook? Il link è ingannevole, il libro è in inglese se preso in formato ebook rispetto ai libri fisici che sono in italiano, correggete !!!

Why you should avoid this "Deluxe" Signed Limited Edition

I love books! I view books as a work of art. Books inspire imagination, they allow you to learn and develop your comprehensive skills, and a high quality book is just beautiful to hold and admire. That said, many books (and this has been true for hundreds of years) are beautifully illustrated, and limited. This edition of the wonderful fairy tale by Neil Gaiman, "Stardust", is indeed limited. It is also signed, however there is NOTHING remotely "Deluxe" about it.

First off, it's no larger than the normal "Gift Edition". The paper quality is nothing special. High quality paper is something you can feel in your hands, and is often thick. The paper in this "Deluxe" edition is on par with what you get in any "normal" book these days. Where is the book printed? I don't know, for some reason it was not stated which is a bit troubling, although admittedly that is the least of the problems here. How about illustrations? There is one frontispiece, which you also get in the normal Gift Edition. The beginning of each chapter has the same 2-color illustration (similar to a B&W illustration). This is the same thing you will find in the normal Gift Edition. So what is special about this "Deluxe" edition? The answer, not really anything. You get a slipcase, which is just a plane, unattractive blue cardboard box. You also get one sheet with Gaiman's signature. This edition is limited to 2000 signed copies. Now, 2000 copies may not sound like a lot, but it actually is. Most fine limited editions will be around 500, perhaps 1000 if there is high demand, however this is in no way a "fine limited edition", and although it is limited and it is signed, I don't think this signature and cheap slipcase are worth an extra $100, which is what it amounts to (currently this is $125, and retail is $150). If this book was $50, I would say go for it. I personally could not be more disappointed in this edition. If you're looking for nice limited editions, you'll have to look for small-press books such as Centipede Press, or Subterranean Press. Those people know how to make beautiful, high-quality, limited editions, and you know what, many of their limited editions are not only beautifully illustrated, much higher quality than this edition, but substantially CHEAPER than this book!

In summary: this is a normal mass-produced book, with a cheap slipcase and a single piece of paper with a signature inserted. This, does not a "Deluxe Limited Edition" make. Caveat emptor...

I decided to read this book because I saw the movie. Based off how much I liked the movie and the characters, I figured the book would be 100x better. The book read very much like a summary over parts that should have had more description, like between the hero and heroine. The characters were sadly under-developed: the star suddenly is in love with Tristan and he is in love with her. I know they spent most of the happiest part of their lives together on the floating ship, but that`s about as descriptive as the author gets on their relationship and interaction together. They hardly even had conversations during that time. When Tristan returns from Wall, and he finds he's love the star all along, all I kept thinking was that she was his rebound. If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with? Don't get me wrong, because I wanted them to have their happily ever after. I just wish there was some/more build up to it besides that Tristan forgot the color of Victoria's eyes.

I mean, the book is supposed to be better than the movie, right? I feel a little cheated. At least I can watch the movie to fill in the gaps.

Fortunately, this book was a freebie from Amazon or I would have been miffed if I'd actually paid money for it. (Was offered a choice out of six titles...it would seem that I chose the wrong one) . The idea for the novel could have been good, but The story was told in a shallow, anecdotal, linear way that could not keep my attention. Oh...and sex should definitely be kept out of a faerie story. It might have only been a paragraph or so, but it was wrong. Surely the author must know that implied sex is far more powerful than graphic detail. Don't really want to read about probing tongues and nipples in a fantasy story... It left me confused as to whether I was reading a story written for children or adults. Will now know to avoid any more books by this author.

Usually books are better than their film versions. Not in this case. It was flat and drab in comparison to the film. I don't want to put up spoilers, but the ending was a non-event when compared to the film. And it also confirmed why I prefer sci-fi to fantasy: the use of unexplained magic! A witch touches someone on the forehead and they transform into an animal. How? Lazy plot devices by people who really haven't progressed beyond primary school levels of story telling.

Luckily, I got this for free as a Kindle offer, so I don't feel as though I wasted real money on it. However, I have deleted it from my Kindle as I have no desire to waste useful memory on it.
