3,0 su 5 stelleNice book but...
Recensito in Italia 🇮🇹 il 26 febbraio 2016
Original, flowing and full of imagination... however, in comparison to the film, I have found him rather disappointing. I expected more. The character of Iveine is completely different from that brought on the screens and not in a positive way: she is ill-tempered, mournful and insensitive. I generally like the books from which film and tv series are drawn so much more. Till now this is the only case in which the contrary has happened. As far as the link, it should be specified that the ebook is only in english.

3,0 su 5 stelle Cleverly written but something lacking for me

This book is fantasy. It is an adult fairytale with a lot of fairytale elements and following a pattern which most readers will recognise. It is set in the village of Wall which is situated at the border of the "real" world and the magic world. The wall that divides them and after which the village is named is protected by the villagers to keep the two worlds apart - except when there is a fair. Tristran lives in Wall and is besotted by Victoria, a young woman who treats him with disdain. In a thoughtless moment Victoria offers herself to Tristran in exchange for a star which they see falling to the ground beyond the wall. In true fairytale style Tristran sets out on a quest to retrieve the star for his ladylove.

As Tristran travels through the magic realm in search of the star and then in his attempt to return to his home after he has found it he encounters many of the things you would expect to find - witches, brothers on a quest, messengers who tell him which way to go and then disappear, people who have been turned into animals, people disguised as things they aren't, etc. as well as Tristran's inexperience and innocence meaning that he misinterprets things and doesn't see danger when it might be obvious to others. The author, of course, tells this story with wit and neatly reinterprets the different elements of the usual stories to give this one a twist.

This is all clever stuff and I enjoyed the fantasy element of the novel. Where I had problems. however, was in the way in which it is written. The writing is such that it is almost formal and I never identified in any way with the characters. I felt that I was observing them and appreciating the way in which the book was written but that I was unable to enter fully into the story as a reader. The writing style made me feel quite detached. Because I was detached I didn't care enough about the characters or the events. This may have just been me and other readers may not experience the same but it all ended up feeling a bit flat and unsatisfying.

I really enjoyed reading this book, the world construction and description was great, you get inmersed in this magical world full of wonders, you can definitely picture both Wall and Fearie. The plot was original and interesting.
Having said that, I feel like the characters weren't developed enough, the book has several "main" characters but you hear very little of/from most of them. Septimus is barely in the book at all. Yvaine doesn't add much to the story either, on the first half of the book all she does is voice her dislike for Tristan, then out of the blue she likes him? It's never really put into words, it felt like a sudden and not well justified change. I felt that the pace of the story was a little rushed at times, maybe if the book had been a few chapters longer...
I must say that I have also watched the movie, and while both are very similar, in my opinion the characters were better developed in the movie; Septimus, Tristan, Yvaine, the Witch, the pirates, all had more participation and substance in the movie; also, the love story is better handled/developed in the movie and the ending is far superior; again, in my opinion, but still, the book is entertaining and a fast read.

Recensito in Germania 🇩🇪 il 15 gennaio 2009

3,0 su 5 stelle Plenty to enjoy but not my cup of tea

I was interested to try this book - until now my only contact with Neil Gaiman has been an inconsequential argument on Twitter over the pronunciation of the word "lichen" (why such a talented wordsmith thinks it should rhyme with "kitchen" is still beyond me, but I digress). Thanks to an amazon offer I had the chance to download the Kindle version for free and I really wanted to enjoy a genre which is somewhat outside my usual comfort zone, written by one of its most celebrated exponents.

The book tells the story of the half-human and half-faerie Tristran Thorn and his quest to bring back a fallen star. Having fallen in love with Victoria Forester and watched the star fall to earth together, he promises to find and retrieve it for her, in exchange for anything he desires. We follow him and his adventures through mythical lands as he searches for the fallen star.

Or at least that's what the blurb says. I found it hard to understand what was going on most of the time. Perhaps it's because this book is fully in the realms of fantasy, or perhaps because of its Victorian time setting, the style of the book made it very difficult to get into - on the occasions I could imagine what was going on, I had no real idea why the things that were suddenly going on were happening. Perhaps I was over-thinking, or perhaps missing the point. Or perhaps my mind doesn't have the level of imagination required. But to me it just seemed like an unconnected string of random impossible events, which didn't really draw me in.

It's nicely-written in lilting prose., and I was able to stick with it right to the end. It's true that there is a sweet ending to the book that just about made it worth what otherwise to me was a hard slog. It doesn't seem fair to say it's a bad book, but I can't give it a great rating because it hasn't convinced me that there are any others of his books I'd want to read.

If he moves onto biology books about algae-like life-forms growing on rocks I might give them a miss too ...

3,0 su 5 stelle For once, I preferred the movie.
Recensito nel Regno Unito 🇬🇧 il 8 febbraio 2016

I'd watched the movie adaptation at least 5 times before reading the actual novel and I must admit, I preferred the movie, which is very rare.

The story and narrative is very magical and I loved every element of it. The novel has a much slower pace to the movie, which I don't think helped the progression. I struggled to want to pick up where I left of, knowing I had to get through a tedium of descriptive paragraphs before anything actually happened.

I think it's Gaiman's writing that put me off this a bit. I had to re-read some parts because I got lost half way through the sentence, having found myself bored and therefore losing concentration. I also found there was far less detail than what the movie presented, which is unusual. It never lost its mystical quality but it lacked what the movie had. The characters were less dimensional. I enjoyed them on screen but if I'd had read the book first I might have been put off watching the movie because of this. Maybe it was the actors that truly got the character's potential to shine through but Gaiman's writing should have done the same. The romance between Tristran and Yvaine was less developed as well, which was a great disappointment. And Tristran's constant whining over Victoria irritated me. It hasn't put me off reading any of his other works but I'll be less existed when I next pick one up. Gaiman's imagination for the story is brilliant though, I just wish he'd told it better.

If I had read this first, I might have enjoyed it more. Then again, it might have put me off watching the movie. I would suggest watching the movie first, as, if anything, it helps you understand and get through the novel a lot better. The movie stays quite true to the book, while cutting out any unnecessary plot.

I don't know, maybe it's just one of those stories that's better off portrayed on screen, instead of in writing.

“There was a skyness to the sky and a nowness to the world that he had never seen or felt or realized before.”

I don’t know how to express what I’m feeling now that I’ve finished Stardust.

The writing style is very fanciful, I honestly don’t know how else to explain it. Sometimes the descriptions were so incredible I stopped to read them a few times, but that style carried over into every aspect of the book and in some cases it felt like it took too long for the author to get through a very short scene.

Despite the fact that it felt drawn out I wanted to keep reading. I’m completely torn because I kind of loved it but I also kind of didn’t.

I forgot to close out and review this book before starting the next.

It was just ok. I had a hard time getting into it. And now that a couple days have gone by I don't have much to say about it other than that.
