What a journey! I feel like I've been transported back in time (1939) and have just returned to the present after reading the last page!

This book! It was completely engrossing! It was like a warm blanket that I could wrap around me and forget where I was! Each character was like someone I knew personally and their story of love, hardship, friendship and loss was my own story!

This is the tale of Osla, Mab and Beth, three young women from different backgrounds, who meet in Bletchley Park during the war and become best friends. Each of them has a particular trait that helps them to decipher the enigma machine that the Germans used to send decoded messages during the war! When disaster strikes their friendship seems to be broken forever. That is until one of them is locked up in an asylum with too many dangerous secrets to keep.
When she turns to her old friends for help, the girls have to put aside their grudges to expose a traitor who worked among them at Bletchley Park.
These women go through so much together it's heartbreaking!

The story alternates between two timelines, which I always find fascinating. One is set during the war and the other is set just days before the royal wedding between Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip takes place in 1947.

Needless to say, it had me cheering, crying, laughing and screaming in outrage with some of the characters. If you're a history buff you can't miss this one!
From the description of the girls' clothing to Glenn Miller's music and the language, the author did a phenomenal job of setting the mood!
Now please excuse me while I go find every other book Kate Quinn has ever written!
Can’t wait for the mini series now!

5,0 su 5 stelle Beauty and Brains to defeat Germany

Kate Quinn has delivered a 'tour de force' with this novel. The detail, research, and invention are all impressive and success is assured here. The subject concerns World War 2 when German submarines were destroying thousands of tons of shipping and so threatening to bring Britain to its knees, the only nation in the war standing between civilisation and Nazi domination. To combat this horrific threat Bletchley Park, a large house in copious grounds, was set up in Buckinghamshire to assemble brilliant men and women, many from the ivory towers of Oxford and Cambridge, mathematicians, scientists and others who developed a flair for breaking German codes. Osla, Mabel and Bethan were three young ladies of very different backgrounds. Osla a Canadian debutante with upper class connections and, through the war, a girl friend of Prince Philipp of Greece when he was ashore, and god daughter of Earl Mountbatten. Mabel, or Mab as she styled herself, was from a poor London East End background who dropped into this life by chance, but with aspiration. Bethan, now Beth, was even more extraordinary. Her mother, a religious zealot, treated her so badly and thought her stupid but it happened that instinctively she could solve crosswords quicker than anyone and was recruited and put to work in the most important code breaking hut. The author has brilliantly used a great many facts and woven them in with her own imagination to produce a riveting story of tension, authoritarian excess and ultimately a spy novel. The traitor at Bletchley is not uncovered till late in the book and not before remarkable happenings with regard to romance and Beth being locked away in a mental institution to prevent her revealing the traitor. A wonderful novel, eminently readable, which will keep you on your toes for the considerable duration.

Three women met at the start of WW2, little to nothing in common other than Bletchley Park.
This story starts directly after the war, and jumps between two time frames.
I found it a brilliant, well woven story, full of colour.
I only wish I had read this prior to visiting Bletchley, a great read if you enjoy books of enduring friendship, the war and going adversity

A bit long but what a story. The whole section in the asylum made me angry, uncomfortable and worried but I had to read on. The central mystery isn’t really introduced until quite a long way in when you’re already invested in the characters. I found myself thinking about the situation even when I wasn’t reading the book! By pure chance I started reading this on the day of Prince Philip’s funeral, totally unaware he’s a main player in the narrative - although not a main character. I am really interested in history but not keen on ‘historical novels’ ! However this was different. Read it, you ‘ ll love it and learn about our recent past. Did you know lobotomies were still practised in this country as rencently as 1973! !

5,0 su 5 stelle Bletchley Park
Recensito nel Regno Unito il 6 aprile 2021

Superbly written and well researched, historic fiction at its best. Atmospheric, full of suspense and emotions, the story transfers the reader to another word, that of codebreakers, cryptanalysts, typists, translators of Bletchley Park. The three protagonists take you there, you’ll read about their commitment to their work, their friendship and fall out, their love and their fears. Even though these three women are from different backgrounds, with different personalities, having different strengths, weaknesses and skills, being part of the Bletchley Park team brings them together. Working there is exhausting and stressful, but also fulfilling and fun. Their friendship is tried but eventually, when a common goal needs to be achieved their friendship and shared values win. So far this is the author’s best WWII novel.

Superbly researched (even though the technical details of the code-breaking equipment were beyond me!), this story of the characters who were thrown together at Bletchley Park during World War II is absorbing and compelling. The author's notes at the end show how many of these were partly based on the real people who worked there. Narratives which jump from one time frame to another often irritate me, but in this case the jumps from the war years to 1947 and back added to the intrigue and tension, so that I had to keep reading to find out what happened next and how the 'traitor' would eventually be uncovered.

5,0 su 5 stelle establishes the importance of the women in code breaking, with technical detail and emotional depth

I love the description of the entirely believable intuitive leaps made to find cribs to break the codes, but more than that I love the way the real, every day (and not so every day) lives of the women are related to the war and secrets. More than that still, the plot is a page turner, and when you get to the end, you discover how much this is an accurate portrayal (with a few artistic variations) of the real people that actually carried out these amazing deeds. A beautiful counterpoint to the now fairly well documented work of Tommy Flowers and Alan Turing, which really gives a sense of the time (that my parents would have lived through).

I wasn’t sure whether another story set in Bletchley Park would warrant the telling, having just seen some televised, but this was an excellent read and kept me up late several nights! It wasn’t just about code breaking but the problems of signing the official secrets act, and the treatment of women, at this time, and the heartbreak of losing men killed in WW2.

I don't write many reviews, I think in part because I read quite a lot of books and would rather be reading my next book than writing about them. Once in a while I come across one that I think is worth pausing over and reflecting upon. The Rose Code is one of those. As someone who played with ciphers when in my early teens, Bletchley Park, the Enigma machines, Turing, et al have always fascinated me. This book is clearly beautifully researched and set in the height of Bletchley's power and intrigue. I recommend it unreservedly to anyone with an interest in Bletchley Park and its history. (Oh, and if you choose to visit Bletchley Park, please also visit and support the National Museum of Computing, which has as a working replica of the Colossus, used to break the Lorenz cipher that the German High Command used, among other computing gems)

Good story based on the work at Bletchley Park, the secret code breaking establishment in WWII. A well written story, and the romance with Prince Philip was sensitively handled and poignant in view of his recent death.

There were some mistakes- a telephone in Shoreditch home, those long boots would have been bespoke and some of the expressions were American but these are slight niggles.

The toast incident at Bletchley had a mention. I visited Bletchley Park in 2019, well worth a visit. The cover story for locals was that it was a hospital for damaged soldiers which explained the bus loads of young women arriving for shifts around the clock and this secret was kept for many years.
