È il primo romanzo di PK Dick che ho letto. Devo subito dire che non mi sembra propriamente un romanzo di fantascienza, nonostante il titolo prenda il nome da una strana entità vagamente definita ed il cui ruolo appena si comprende. L'autore è l'io narrante del romanzo del quale è protagonista insieme al suo alter-ego, Horselover Fat, frutto della sua psicosi. Vi è una certa dose di riferimenti gnostici nel testo, ma la religione e la ricerca del Salvatore sono più che altro un elemento che caratterizza la follia del protagonista sdoppiato. Alcuni elementi sono autobiografici. Il romanzo è scritto bene fino al settimo capitolo, ovvero fino alla morte del secondo personaggio femminile di rilievo che vi compare, dopo di che diventa meno lucido e brillante nello stile. Il capitolo 13 pare essere quello finale, mentre il 14, quello che rivela la ricaduta psicotica dell'autore, sembra un'aggiunta immotivata. In tutta onestà, non so se raccomandarne la lettura.

This is a seriously strange book, and really quite an unsettling read in places.
PKD is well known for his very many creative SF novels which are the product of a unique imagination, and that some of his work is influenced by the 1960s drug culture. He suffered from episodes of psychiatric illness with a psychotic episode in 1974. This is the basis of much of the novel Valis which is semi-autobiographical where he examines the causality and nature of his experiences through his alter ego Horselover Fat ('Horselover' being a translation of 'Philip' from Ancient Greek, and 'Fat' the translation of 'Dick' from German).
The novel can be read on many levels and raises a number of thought provoking angles, such as the nature of reality and delusion, and the basis of religious belief. PKD's writing cleverly draws the reader from the perspective that Horselover Fat is psychotic to the possibility that he may actually be chosen by Valis to reveal higher truths, and in this lies some ambiguity. In places it reads like a satire on religious beliefs and cults. There is also some scattering of black humour, particularly from his encounters with his Israeli counsellor.
However despite this, I found the start slow and difficult to read in places with too much rambling metaphysics and philosophy. This is really for the fans of PKD rather than those in search of a more mainstream SF novel, hence the 3-stars; quite a difficult book to judge.

Ok, so, Im not familiar with Philip K. Dick outside of seeing, A Scanner Darkly. I picked this book because it was featured on Lost, and I thought, well, why not?

So I read it.

Its a short book, but for some reason it took me three weeks to plow through it. I was fairly open to the names(Horselover Fat...?)and the concept. I liked some of the ideas and characters which contrasted each other. I loved the beginning, and the entire bit about how when one tries to save someone, theyre really the ones who are in self destructive mode. I loved the concept post Gloria's death, and Sherry's bout with self pity. I loved Kevin the cynic and his theory as to why his cat died, and I loved the ending wrap-up which answers his question and really solidifies his beliefs which is similar to my own. For what its worth, Dick really dives into the meat of religion, and people, and why everything happens and presents a decent argument which is ruined by the in-betweens that sound like the product of a really long acid trip.

What I didnt get was the middle part about Mother Goose, the manifest, the pink light, the talk about fictional people tied to century old teories, jumbled with, and awkwardy connected to a pink light which transfers information exclusively to the chosen ones via sattelite, or a little girl who is God, or Krishna, or a program designed to answer questions and whisk away multiple personality disorders via tubes and sattlites, and...What?

I dont know.

And dont ask me, but when I finished this book, what I got was that this was really one giant acid trip in California shared by out of luck, out of work dudes with too much time and money on their hands.

And thats the end of that.

As always, Dick has a quirky, engaging way of writing that makes you turn the pages. But, as a whole, the ensuing story itself is a little empty and left me wanting a little more substance. You can certainly tell he was trying to quickly summarize the main points of his own exhaustive exegesis. As a work of fiction, however, it left me feeling a little isolated, like PKD had been writing more for himself than for me.

I have been a Phillip K.Dick fan for many years but I find Valis really hard to get into. I'm up to page 41 and so far it's not really been a novel but more of a (rather turgid) philosophical discourse, and no science fiction either. I persevered this far because other people have given it good reviews but I'm about to give up on it. And it's one of a trilogy!

I have read a few other Philip jk duck books and enjoyed them. This novel is quite different to the others I have read. Although I never felt like giving up on the book, enjoyed the style of writing and parts of there story, I didn't feel particularly satisfied at the end.

I can see where the author is heading, towards a definitive, pantheistic view of the world, but in the end, it doesn't work. Too many words, too many conflicting ideas, too many suggestions but the reality won't budge. The visions don't take off, they are not fully credible in spite of the masterful penmanship. You keep reading but you stop believing and that's a pity. Because this is a major Sci-fi writer...
